Hello,

I was just wondering if anyone had any experience of moving horses into the UK from France? As far as I'm aware they don't have to go through any quarantine procedure? Is it just a case of putting them on a horse trailer and crossing the border. I have some french horses arriving at my yard and I wan't to assess risk and put a decent quarantine procedure in place. All my stables are together in the same barn so I was going to insist on a 2 week 24/7 turn out in a separated paddock so we can assess the situtation. We're going to worm on arrival and I want a vaccination history. Do you think this is reasonable? Do you think I should insist on a vetting too? What about the horse box they travelled in? Would it be ok to park it on the yard? I think its important to be careful but I don't want to scare everyone to death.

A friend imports alot. Most recently 3 from Belgium.
They are kept separate although I can't remember how long for. They are also vetted before being loaded by transporter.
I'm going up there in around an hour, If you have any specific questions, please pm me if you prefer.

There are no quarantine proceedures from France but horses do need to have a health certificate to say they are fit to travel. Keeping them separate is a good idea just in case but to you know if they have been in France and owned by the people importing them or have they been bought in France and are being imported by a new owner? If they have been purchased are they French origin as if they have been imported to France from Eastern Europe and are then heading to you thats more likely to need you to quarantine them.

Horses from france don't need anything other than a passport. It is the only country in Europe that no health papers(traces) are needed either way. From u.k to france you only need export licence. No vet check needed either way!

Under the Tri-partite agreement there is no requirement for horses coming from France to travel with anything other than their passport. Some transporters want only vacinated horses on their lorries others don't insist as this is not a requirement for importation. It also depends on what area of France they are coming from as there are cases of Western Nile Disease in certain areas in France so I would strongly suggest quarantining them when they arrive. The lorry if a professional transporter should have been disinfected before it returns to the UK picking up on route.
