I've just started a new job in Cambridge, and planning to move here with my 16hh Anglo-Arab Jack soon. I should like know if anyone can recommend a good DIY livery yard within 30 minutes' drive of Cambridge.

Ideally, it would be like the yard we are currently at in Doncaster:
  • All-year round turnout
  • A common field with around a dozen horses
  • A stall for tacking up and grooming
  • A pen for feeding at the field
  • Good hacking opportunities directly from the yard
  • Some shows within riding distance

I should be grateful if anyone can suggest a similar yard.

Kind regards,

Martin

I live about 1/2 from Cambridge (Little Hadham, near Bishop's Stortford) and there are a few places here and the hacking is fabulous (but not sure about shows you can ride to!). For DIY livery I would have thought you wanted to be only about ten minutes away though! Cambridge is lovely so all I can say is you are lucky to be moving here! x

I would say if you find one with all those facilities, it will be full!!!!

I never thought livery yards would be so hard to find around here, but I guess because of the soil type etc, it is mostly arable, and there aren't very many (decent) diy livery yards at all!!!

its really difficult to find 365 turnout around here due to the soil type holding water like its gonig out of fashion, the downside to being the fens.
you have not listed any schooling/arena facilitys? if that is the case you might stand more chance of getting all round turnout renting privetly.

good luck though as its a lovley area.

Thanks, JoBird, I might take a look down that way. My plan is to find somewhere for Jack to live within about 30 minutes of Cambridge, and for me to live as close as possible to him.

Thanks for the advice, Maisy. I think I'll just have to look further afield to find somewhere suitable.

Thanks, Aoibhin. I don't really need a school or arena as we mostly just hack out. The only problem with renting as that I don't want him to be on his own as he would be miserable, so I would need to find a shared field. I'm not sure how easy they are to find.

Do you have an idea where you want to live around Cambridge. I keep my girl about half an hour east and she lives out in a group 24/7 with good off road hacking.

We're 30 mins from Cambridge going East - near Bury St Edmunds. We used to live in Cambridge itself & there's certainly more livery places & land to rent here than there was there. Hacking great too, in/around Kings/Thetford Forest.

If you enjoy hacking then consider North Hertfordshire (i.e. Benington, Ardeley, Walkern) as we have one of the best networks of off road riding in the country? (Get a copy of the O.S. Ordnance Survey maps fo the areas and check the bridleways out).
