Hello, I am starting an internship in Tangmere in September which is involving me moving to the Chichester area so I was hoping that any local members would be able to help me out with a little bit of experience/advice. I currently know very little so please tell me everything you know about riding in the area!

Ideally I would love to find a pony/horse allrounder for share 2/3 days per week as I have really missed riding whilst at University. I am a competent rider and would love to develop my riding but would also be happy to ride a happy hacker, exercise a hunter and school a cheeky pony or just generally help out. I would be happy to do associated jobs but could only offer a limited contribution. Does this sound feasible to find a share within a 20-30 min drive of the area?

Otherwise, does anyone have any feedback of the local riding schools? Lavant house looks nice but it seems quite expensive. Is this typical for the area? Are they worth the money or would you suggest that I could find better value elsewhere? I would be looking to restart flatwork lessons for basic dressage (before University I was working on; working in a true outline, shoulder in, shortening, lengthening and direct transitions etc to a recognisable standard) and, if they have an honest school master, I would love to begin jumping properly again. My target is only to jump a 3ft course with a good rhythm whilst not wanting to cry in fear. I can jump – I just have trust issues above 2’3-2’6. :o Again I would be looking at places to ride within a 20-30 min max radius of the area.

Thanks in advance for any replies. They will be a massive help!

just to say im very jealous, I lived in Tangmere for many years before moving to south wales. Lavant house is nice and the instructors were always good and the horses always looked well cared for. Costs are more expensive in the sussex area. There is Hunters lodge Bognor Regis way, have not been there for a long time though. There is also a lovely riding school near Tangmere and ui cant think of the name of it but they have a website, so try googling riding schools near chichester.

I'd suggest placing adverts in the local saddleries/feed stores as I am sure there are loads of people who would like a sharer in the area.

It might also be worth contacting the Arundel Veterinary Hospital in case any of their clients mention anything.

Lavant House has some lovely horses but is super expensive!

Livery yards to try would be Boxgrove Competition Stables.

I hope this helps a little! I live in Birdham around 10 minutes from Tangmere. I would definitely suggest looking for something North of the A27 as South has rubbish hacking!

Lavant House would be the only RS in the are I would recommend. They have good instructors and very nice horses (well schooled and experienced). Proper school masters not your usual kick along RS types.

Thanks everyone. I think I will definitely see if I can find a share but otherwise Lavant House sounds like it might be worth a look so I might try to visit them at some point. Thank you for all the links Happy Horse - they sound some brilliant places to try and I will also work on trying to stay north of the A27 then!

pixiebee - I'm afraid that I couldn't find any information on the riding school near Tangmere. :o

Any other locals? :)
