Hi, I am moving to the Republic of Ireland and would like to live somewhere that satisfies both my sports and social needs. Being from Scotland I don't know anyone so would like to be able to join in with some clubs such as salsa, hiking, singing and social. I will be bringing 2 horses and would like to be able to ride out and explore the countryside as well as compete at affiliated showjumping so a quality equestrian competition centre nearby would be ideal. Access to an airport would be advantageous and being surrounded by gorgeous countryside and welcoming folk would be wonderful. Heading over this weekend to explore. Any suggestions as to area, specific yards, trainers, accommodation etc? Many thanks.

only seeing this now and you might already be over here. It really depends on where you will be based. Dublin airport is reasonably accessible and the area of North Dublin surrounding the airport is a very horsey areas with plenty of choices of livery yards, trainers etc. Meath and Kildare are only a quick spin up or down the motorway and again are very horsey. Let me know what discipline you are particularly interested in or more specific region and I will do my best to help you.

Good luck with your search and new adventure. I'm in the process of buying a place in the wilds of Connemara :) I'm trying not to get too stressed over it as i keep worrying in case it falls through.

Hello Gollygosh, I leave tomorrow for Ireland and, based on advice so far, am going to investigate: Cork, Mullingar and Waterford areas. Showjumping is my passion and I love to hack out and explore. I have flagged Meath and Kildare on the map and will see if I can drive through them enroute to one of my destinations. Thankyou again :)

Hi TrasaM, what took you to Connemara other than the tremendous native ponies? Yes buying a property can be very stressful, thankfully most people say the stress was worth it to get a place that they really wanted. Good luck and keep us posted with how you get on!

Totally agree....you need to be based in Kildare/meath/Dublin if you want countryside, airport and sj!And loads of great facilities in the East and trainers....I live in west and facilities sadly lacking but we do have great XC. Personally I love Cork but it can be a bit far from everywhere else!

There's an airport in Cork too!!! No reason at all you have to be in Kildare/Meath etc. aside from anything else the motorway network is great and you can be in Dublin airport fairly quickly but for European travel you can get everywhere from Cork too

Hope you had a successful trip. I grew up in Connemara so it's a back to my roots move. It was just chance that I found a lovely place which is set up for horses already. :) it's a very special place hence my anxiety about it all going smoothly. And yes, the local ponies are very nice :)

Thankyou all for your support. We had a great 4 days exploring Ireland and traveled the length and breadth of the country finally ending up between Waterford and Dungarvan on the south east coast. What a beautiful country Ireland is. Attended a superb show at Barnadown and saw some superb facilities across the country. Can't wait to return at the beginning of October to find a house....desperately trying to buy some horses before then to bring them with me. Have a great weekend all!
