moving to new yard - what should I do with my field?

Hello,

Quite a few of you helped me about a month ago as I was debating whether to move yards or not. I have decided that with my recent health news that I do need to move to a yard where more help is available if needed - so I have taken the plunge and I move September 5/6th!

On DIY/Assisted you are given an acre and a half to do with what you like. I am in two minds of whether to split it now and use half for winter, save half for next summer.... OR do I let him have it all for winter (bigger space, hopefully less churned) and then rest half of it after winter and rotate him between the two?

I would probably let him have it all for now, then once it starts getting muddy divide it in half or how ever suits. Therefore when it starts drying up you have a nice bit to put him on so hes not standing in any bit thats churned up whilst its drying out. Hope that makes sense.

If you let him have it all over winter so it gets churned up the liklihood is that he will wreck the grass and the soil structure so it doesn't grow very well in the spring and will be weedy. (I speak from experience having had my fields reseeded 2 years ago!). I would only give him 1/3 in the wet months. I am lucky in that I can give mine a small paddock in winter and they can have access to the hardstanding in the yard so they are not in mud the whole time. I feed their hay in the yard.

i'd say let him have all of it just now and then come october half it so that he can have grass to go onto in march etc and put him in that side till it starts to grow in the other just remember to poo pick lol
