After talking to a friend who wished she hadn't moved up[she went double clear and now can only do open pre novice] I am undecided
I have one qualification for next years prenovice regional and if I move up and get a point [maybe] I wouldn't be able to do regional.
After yesterdays champ ,which I really enjoyed, I would like to try for the pre novice next year.I know we are never going to be super stars of eventing .In show jumping a brit nov horse can try a newcomers and if it goes double clear it can still do brit nov [I think] so it is a shame to be knocked out of prenovice if you go double clear at Novice.I know you can do open pre nov but there aren't so many of those and they don't lead to a champ.
Thinking of withdrawing from Gatcombe. Like to know your views

Umm, thats a tough one. How old is your horse? If he's fairly young and you don't intend on selling him, then you have all the time in the world to move up, after you've had fun at PN level?

I'd say, keep with PN until your bored and won all you can, then move up!

I would never sell him I bred him , he is 10 but only started eventing May last year, before I show jumped up to fox and dressaged a bit. He had a ditch phoebia and I rode a good eventer for someone else, so didn't need to event him and it is a big pool at Novice

novices are scary I think!

If he's going to be around, then just enjoy him and do what you fancy, if you want a challenge then do nov, if you want a crack at PN champs next year then go for it!

must be great to have the choice! He looks a stunner!

Rightly or wrongly we are trying to win a PN before moving up..
Our horse although old has little experience and we don't want to overface him.
The height won't be a problem but the degree of difficulty may be, hence our wait.
I had no idea a double clear would knock us out of PN, so that may be another reason to wait until next season...
The OPN however seems to have a lot fewer in their class than PN! The one this weekend had 12 I think, which gives you a better chance than against almost 40..
Can you enter OPn or do you have to have won something?

It totally comes down to what you feel happiest doing. If by continuing at PN and aiming for next years championships you are enjoying yourself and not feeling pressured then carry on. At the end of the day you are doing it for fun.

I'd do whichever you'd have more fun doing.
I moved Moon to novice because I got bored at PN, we're never going to win a class anyway!

No I don't think so - hence why it's an open! Thing is most of those 12 could have been nov/int/adv horses so a bit tougher comp than normal PN!

If everyone waited to win a PN before moving up - a lot would never! Unless your dressage is top notch it's hard to win a PN. but that doesn't mean there jumping isn't up to scratch.

Aww, poor Moon, I'm sure the dressage judge will appreciate her one day!

I think she looks great!

Personally I think if you are having fun and your ultimate aim would be to do the championship then go for it. If you go well at the PNRF then you can have up to 5 points before the final. It sounds like your horse is a good SJ and very likely to go clear SJ so my advice would be hold on do an early PNRF next year qualify then go novice!

Hurrah for us then.......... got through a whole bottle of RR today.

I would have as much fun in the lower classes as poss cos as you'll know from BSJA once you're out there's no going back

I'd agree that if you're still having fun PN and not in a hurry, no reason not to hold on before going novice..OPN are usually particularly competitive because you normally get a lot of nice horses with points that can put in a seriously good test! (although thats not to say yours can't either

Probably stupid but have you checked the rules for PN regional finals? As it may be that the rule about double clear at novice doesn't apply to these, certainly it doesn't for the Grassroots championships I don't think. Would be worth checking if you haven't already as it may be that the regional finals sections are run under different rules to allow horses to move up a level beforehand if they want to.
Qualification aside if your horse is going well why not give Novice a crack? My last eventer went from intro to novice in 3 months and was placed at his first attempt. It's not as big a step as you might think, all depends on how he feels I would say, and from reading your post on the grassroots festival (well done by the way!) it sounds like he is more than capable.
Good luck anyway whatever you decide

I totally agree with you. I'm sure there is something in the rule book about qualifying and then upgrading to the next level but you are still able to do your championships at the lower level. Definately need to check the rule book or ring up BE? Also, if you feel ready to upgrade to Novice the you should go for it. I knew when my horse was ready because he was making Pre novice feel extremely easy, so that's when I upgraded. Good luck in whatever you decide.

The rules are that at the time of doing a PNRF the horse must be grade 4 (no points). But for the championship you can have up to 5 points. So you can do a novice but no double clears!!

I wish it was that easy. How do you not try to go double clear.Shame they don't allow you to do regional with a couple of points.Dressage are starting to encourage people to move up by allowing some points leeway.
I've emailed Gatcombe if she will get her money back we will withdraw if she still has to pay I think it is lets have a go

Well the other way of looking at it is if you do well at novice you could qualify for the Novice Regional Finals and do them instead!

How about you get the PN Champs qualification in the bag - then do some novice (but I'd have a go at Gatcombe if you can't get your money back just to see what happens
