hi im finally moving yards and at my new one im free to do as i please i can have 24hr turn out or i can stable him either way i have a stable... so my question is hes a 7yo tb raced and gets normal turnout and stabled at night... do you think he will cope with few nights completly out through the week? hes not a cold tb and doesnt shiver in the rain and i have adequate rugs and also a stable to dry off and feed hay x

I have the same situation, I moved from full livery to a diy place with 24/7 turnout just 2 weeks ago. I wondered if my boy would cope with being out the whole time....he loves it :)) he looks a bit despondent if I ever place him in his stable for a couple of hours while I faff about cleaning tack etc. He'd rather be out. Probably in October I will start bringing him at night-time again...but for the moment, he's a happy chappy with his new situation.
My boy is 6, he's always been on full livery until now.
A previous horse, a 17.3hh Hanoverian dressage gelding - needed some time off after tweaking something. I popped him out in a field 24/7 with some other geldings for 3 months...he loved it as well, he was happy as Larry ;) - it was over the summer months I might add.
At the beginning, for both, I did worry.... "will he cope, is he ok, is he unhappy to be out in the rain?...." - both were fine, and I needn't have worried at all.
As long as they have some suitable company and enough grazing, a water supply, and some shelter (even just trees)...there's no reason why they shouldn't be out. :)

thanks for the reply itsnice to hear from someone in a simliar situation!

he wont be out all winter only on the nights it seems like it will be ok and he wont be out when the ice and snow comes ...but i worry he will stress but he will have 6 other geldings and a mare to be with and its a lot of land and theres tree coverage :)

i just worry ... it might stop him weaving in the stable.. i hope anyways :) x

he does have mudrash though is that hard to manage while hes out? x

My yard has a fab set up, lots of grazing and a big barn that the horses are free to wander in and out of as they please. It's been a bit of an eye-opener as in rainy weather when I would have thought they would go in to the barn, they horses choose to stay outside happily munching! They come in more to escape the heat/flies.
I'm sure your boy will be fine, as the others have said, he'll probably enjoy it! :)

mine went from in 18 hours a day to out 24.7!!

shes utterly thrived....looks amazing and really happy!

any horse can adjust! if you have a stable then if he drops masses of weight pop him back in or a bigger rug on!

good luck!! :)

At the end of my road is a happy as Larry about 25 year old TB, lives out no stable just a field shelter. He's well rugged as appropriate and well looked after (and if the owner is at work and it's turned out to be hotter/colder than expected I'll often text and see if she wants him rugged/unrugged when I pass by)

I would say he would really enjoy the extra freedom, horses can cope (most anyway) its also saving you pennies in bedding and hay etc.. bonus :)

My lad has been out pretty much the whole time since ive had him (3wks) with about 2 nights where he has stayed in he much prefers to be out, ive not even thought about rugging up either but he's a cob x.
(will only rug up if he's dropping weight or feeling the chill)
Its due to rain heavy and hail storm tomorrow so I may pop a rug on then... not sure though.

Enjoy the time he has out whilst you both can really, I know Im making most of it.
I had a Lami before so couldn't stay out 24/7 I would allow him out 24/7 very rarely as I liked to monitor his intake carefully, so this is a novelty to me too.

ENJOY IT :D

I should imagine the weaving won't be a problem when he's out.
I do keep mine rugged, according to the weather, as I don't like him getting fly bites-especially in the girth /saddle area. I alternate between a fly rug with neck (and fly mask) when it's warm/dry and a lightweight (no filling) waterproof rug with neck when it's wet. I spray any exposed parts of him with fly spray (Tri-Tec), then he goes out again. He is in individual turnout, he has two ponies in a field on one side, and three ponies in a field on the other side. Plus a couple more horses diagonally across from him, so he has lots of company. Seems pretty chilled out, he was anxious for the first few days, but is now completely happy, and is laying down by the fence next to the other horses etc.

Having him out does save lots of money (saves you a bale of shavings per week, and probably saves 3 small bales of hay), possibly about £21/week. I still give him a hard feed, but have dropped this down from 3/day to just one/day. He has porked out, he's gained weight from being on grass 24/7....his girth doesn't quite fit like it did a couple of weeks ago ;)

My tb is a wuss when it comes to wet and cold but with adequate rugs, pleanty of hay and a few hours in during the day or the odd night in for a break from the rubbish weather he is much happier than being stables constantly. You may find he enjoys being out more at keep him out 24/7 too!
