Okay, opinions needed please - I will try to keep short!!
My poor pony has moved yards 4 times in 2 years, twice because of illness (needed 24 hour turnout, yard didn't offer it and needed outside stable on other yard, none available) and twice because of just problems on the yard... Anyway, I am happy where I am now, but, my pony has mild ataxia and for the last 3 weeks has been living out 24/7, he had another pony for company and it has made an amazing difference to his Ataxia to the point that he is no longer showing any symptoms and I can think about trying to ride him again, yay, amazing news! However, the pony he is living out with is now coming in at night and Charlie will not live out alone :-( he gallops around when everything else comes in and will not settle, he even starts before they all come in sometimes... Anyway, I really want him out if it is making him that much better, but it's not going to work on the yard I am on, nobody else wants there's out overnight (which is fair enough) and he just won't have it. I have two choices, move to a yard that provides 24/7 all year turnout or keep him in overnight and hope that in the summer some horses will be out 24/7 so he can stay out then. I really don't know what to do for the best, I know that moving him is starting to affect him mentally, he isn't a stressy horse, but I think he is becoming more stressy due to moving, but equally keeping him out 24/7 is making him better and I may even be able to ride him. simply question - What would you do?

I'd bring hm in and see how he goes. If he can get tuned out early every day with a companion he may settle into a winter routine. It's very likely someone will be turning out full time when the weather improves. Not easy. Good luck.

Another vote for a companion if possible. I have 2 which is sometimes a big effort but the one thing it does is to allow me to have peace of mind about turnout and knowing they have company.

A companion is certaintly something I have considered, couple of reservation are that 1. I don't actually know if yard owner will allow it and 2. I'm not that well and would struggle to take care of a 2nd pony, both physically and emotionally :-(

Thanks everyone for you replies. It seems everyone is leaning towards don't move him, either get a companion or put him out on daytime only turnout until summer when hopefully others will go out 24/7? It is helpful to have your opinions, the only thing that worries me is he is so much better out neurologically, for him and for me, and it might mean I can start riding again (but then is that selfish...)

If it makes that much of a difference to his health then I would move him to somewhere that can guarantee 24/7/365. I wouldn't bring him in, personally.

I had the opposite issue - found a wonderful grass yard. 24/7/365, hay in field, excellent facilities, harmonious herd - turns out 2 of my horses struggled with the grass so I had to move them after one ended up in hospital.
