Well the vet came earlier than expected and rang me to say he was on his way before 12 so I had a mad dash down the yard (only 10 mins away).

Anyway vet had a look at him, reminded him of my concerns and the lump etc and he took at at the lump, had a feel around, checked his glands and asked me a few questions.....

Has he got a cough - no
Runny nose - no
Is he eating grass - yes
Drinking - yes
Normal in himself - yes

He said it looks like he's had a bang or a kick which has caused the lump, he said there is some heat/swelling but its not an abcess or anything to worry about but will give you some bute (pro dynam) or something like that I cant remember off hand as I've left it at the yard, 14 sachets (to give him 2 sachets daily with his food as in morning then night)...only thing is he's not eating his bucket feed but I need to put something in more tasty...mix/carrots..anything like that). He said its nothing actually in his throat and its not an infection, just a tender place to take a knock. He said it is not the sort of lump to just come up in day and that it seemed a little tender for him when he was pressing on it, so just bruising and if he's eating grass ok and passing normal poo's, then there is no obstruction etc.

Thing is there is no signs of a kick (broken skin etc) hence why was not sure what it was.

I asked him if he should take a blood sample and he grinned and said no, he really does not need one.

Feel a bit of a wally really but at least I know, I didn't want to take him to this dressage thing on Sunday if he was carrying anything plus I also wanted to know for the sake of the other horses on the livery yard.

He's been happily grazing away though.

Meanwhile I had a dig around the hay barn and found some better bales too. The hay on the right is what I'd been using this last week or so, the hay on the left is dust free green (not that the other was really dusty, I wouldn't fee him bad hay) but is much better.

So I'll just keep my eye one the swelling and hopefully watch for it to go down. Didn't take a picture of the lump as you wouldn't be able to make it out on a photo.

So all smiles again, hopefully nothing to worry about but will still keep my eye on things.

Thank you guys x

....this means I cant chicken out of going to the dressage on Sunday though doesn't it....hmmm it could snow though

If he is still bit fussy, you may need to get him something tasty to get the bute into him. Treacle, apple sauce, a bowl of soaked sugar beet, etc so he eats it.

Assume it is UN-Affaliated comepetition on Sunday??
becasue of its properties for things such a lameness, bute is a prohibited substance under BD rules.

Oh yes and yes it's definitely Un-affiliated, were only doing the walk and trot test, he's only 4 and its his first go at a test.

Pheeewww......was just wondering if the vet had been, and then you posted.

Good news then, now you can't get out of Sunday.....bit of an extreme measure, getting the vet out in order to wriggle out of your test!

I would be VERY worried about my horse... if he'd kept his rug that clean!! There'd have to be something seriously wrong with him, mudlark that he is!

Glad he's OK. Mines been poorly for 3-4 weeks and it's been a real worry, hopefully coming out of it now but I reckon the bill's going to be a WHOPPER, thank goodness for insurance or I'd have had to cancel Christmas!

oh and as for the rug...only because it's new, it wont be that color for long.

Could it be he maybe was stung by something? I actually saw a bee the other day!

There wouldn't necessarily have to be a visible site of a kick wound either as quite a fleshy area around the neck so would just bruise more than anything.

Glad vet has put your mind at ease though.

Quite possibly then and yes not always forced to be a wound I agree, a bee at this time of year, poor Mr Buzzy does he know its going to snow!

I am so glad he's ok...

Hopefully he'll be eating lots of good stuff before long...

If he still doesnt want to eat I found FastFibre to be great for my boy when he's being fussy - non heating but really tasty!!! just to get the bute into him - or hollow out an apple...

xx

Oh I'm so glad he seems to be ok. I thought about you too today cos I know how worried I'd be if Jerry stopped eating.
Anyway, you can do no more than keep an eye on him and see that he is well in himself.
Loads of luck for Sunday, although I'm not sure you need it - I bet Mack will enjoy his outing. Remember it is an achievement in itself to get there, compete and get home safely so don't put too much pressure on yourself, just go and enjoy yourselves!

Glad he is ok, try some peppermint cordial in his feed, just buy some from off licence or supermarket, pour a bit in his feed... they normally love it!! cheap too!!
If its any consellation when my cob had a lump i called the vet and he came out chkd her nothing was found and said she was fine would be gone by morning and it was!! He laughed and said it was expensive reassurance!! lol

Sorry to hear about your poorly boy, has he had any injections in his neck lately? If he has, it may be a reaction to it, this happened to my mare and the lump grew from about golf ball size, to rugby ball size in about 7 days (with daily vet checks).

If he has, please get the vet back out and have more checks, ember got scoped, x-rayed, and ultra sound and given a concoction of medicines. She too wouldn't eat, so I found best way to get bute in was to dilute it with about 75ml of warm water and syringe it in, or mix it into grated carrot, then if he is struggling swallowing, with the carrot being grated it is lovely and soft and tasty.

Best of luck, I hope he picks up soon

Ther is always the option of putting the bute in a hollowed out apple or carrot but what I found worked really well was to mix the bute in chocolate sauce before popping in a tiny bit of food. My mare would only take her bute that way. I bought out the stocks of chocolate sauce in the local supermarket at the time!!!
If it works don't knock it.
