Mr Toby was nodding when I approached his stable this am when usually his head is over the door waiting and I get a little whicker now which has made my day no end!

I then saw this........ I think he has just rubbed himself raw somehow.. poor lad but it's got a little bigger this evening as I got him in from field it seems to have got bigger...

it's just this side of his muzzle, but tonight was on the crease to his nostril too... haven't put anything on it just left it but cleaned it.

what do you guys think?.....

Can you sew some sheepskin to the inside of the muzzle? I'm always sewing sheepskin to stuff as my mare rubs easily, it really works. :)

Faracat I thought for a min there you said to sew sheepskin to his muzzle lol... he doesn't wear a grazing muzzle.... I am talking about his nose muzzle ha ha

don't think he would like it too much if I started sewing sheepskin to his mouth ha ha ha ha ha

It looks like there is a spot in the middle of it, possible that he has a blackthorn in there which is causing an abcess, hence the reddened skin.

nothing there though I have looked thoroughly when he lets me he's a bit tetchy about me trying to take pics or look at it poor boy... :(

I shall have another look in morning see how it is... just baffling me

It could be an allergy. If he has just moved to your yard there may be something in the field he is sensitive to that wasn't in his previous field - possibly buttercups?

I thought allergy straight away but he's being fed the same feed, although now in a different country, no buttercups in field it's just grass, has wet hay...same hay as he's had since he got here Friday

I would be thinking the evil flys are making it worse to be honest, cover it in sudo cream then go over it with some fly spray.. if you can borrow one a nose net will keep the flys off it and allow it to heal.

Whoops! I feel so silly! :o

As he didn't get the sore from wearing a grazing muzzle, please ignore my advice. :p :D

Could it be a sting - we had a mare who one day got a swollen lump on her nose, it then burst and was red and sore, then it seemed to clear up. If he's been stung and then rubbed it maybe?

I honestly couldn't tell you, nothing there the night before, but that's not to say it couldn't happen over night, but I don't like seeing him sore like this...
