"As horse manure is officially classed as commercial waste, the deliberate burning of muck heaps is a prosecutable offence. " - What happened!! In my younger days there was always someone wanting a bag or 2 for their roses, now it is classed as commerical waste!! How is burning vegtable matter an issue when the likes of Austrialia are plagued by forest fires!

I assume they now state that muck heaps left to rot on open ground contaminate the water table? So are gardeners banned from using it as a mulch? Is this restriction some thing other countries have to put up?

Not where I live as far as I know. All Municipalities have different rulings though.

All water in my area is drawn from private wells - there is NO mains water system, or sewage for that matter. Obviously no-one dumps their muck where it will go into water courses, but, this is the back of beyond, no one knows, or cares, if I have a muck heap the size of a house back there in my own woods.

If I were to set fire to it, that would be another matter, if the wind was blowing in the right direction in high summer I could burn a thousand square miles of Southern Ontario to the ground. Burning is a serious no-no where I live.

Is it organic? I doubt it to be honest, the horse gets wormers, supplements, sometimes medication, often the land is treated with chemical products. Not organic. A natural by-product, but not organic.

I think the ban on burning came from the number of out-of-control fires that have occured.

I completely agree, it is utterly ridiculous, outragous even.

Sorry what I meant was it is on the whole vegetable matter & rots down & I am not sure that there is enough chemicals coming out from the wormers to warrent it being classed as commercial waste.

How the world or should I say Britain has changed. Yes years ago you could sell your muck heap when it had rotted down to allotment holders. But!!! because the lastest pestidides(hope I spelt that right) and herbisdes(again) Things have gone Wrong BIG TIME!, some muck you cann't put down if it was sprayed for ragwort as it goes through the stock but makes a mess of the Veggies. And as you know shavings take 4 - 8 months to start breaking down. Know of a couple of farmers that plough it in but that's from their on animals.
