Muck heaps???

Hi, I'm new to keeping a horse and there is just me and my friend in a nice mans field.

We poo pick every day but what do you do with all the muck??? We have a couple of heaps but is there anything we can do to help break it down quicker or do you get it taken away (who would do that? would it be exensive?)

Please, even things that seem as complete common sense to you, may not occur to me!!!

I read previous posts about 'spiral' muck heaps but dont have a clue what that is about!!!

Any help or advice, greatly appreciated

I don't know about how to get them to break down any quicker, not sure you can tbh, however I have a couple of people that come every weekend or so and bag it up and take it away for their gardens. I found them via Freecyle. They will never take enough to keep it tiny, however it keeps it manageable and it doesn't grow stupidly big!!

Oh and I step my heap and always tramp it down to keep it really compacted, seems to be rotting quite nicely!!
 
You could ring round local farmers to see if any of them offer a muck heap removal service - also if you want to keep the heap as reduced as possible you can buy worms that help eat up the muck heap quicker! :) do a google search for them! :)

We have an allotment near our house so had a word with them, they nearly snapped my hand off for it.

I have four of those 40 litre tub trug buckets and put the muck straight into them, drop it off on the way back from the yard each day job done, no muck heap and I get some free veggies every so often!
 
I currently have a gardener who comes and takes some of mine away. Other than that I occasionally spread it and some folk I know burn it.
 
i no of a few who burn theirs, most get people in to remove the heap, pile it up for 6months or what ever, some spread it back onto their fields, most cant get rid of it so gets left as they dont like paying for people to take it away!!!
 
Don't burn it, it is illegal and potentially dangerous.
Offer it to all and sundry for gardens, veg plots etc, or ask your local farmers etc. maybe you could bag some up and leave it outside your field gate?
 
i must admitt its a bit silly burning it, ive seen 1 get out of hand but that was down to the owner not watching it, i was called in with the sprayer full of water to dampen things down.

Alot around here have signs out side their gates saying free muck and alot do turn up with little trailers and bag alot up and that does go to gardens etc.

We have had a guy come over an take some away but they certianly produce more than I can get rid of so far but some very good idea's and I will google the worms!!!

Keeping it compact is a good idea, I'll get some boards and stamp it.
