Do any of you know the legal or recommended distance a muck heap should be from the yard and horses? or where i could find this?

if there is a requirement law for this i dont see many people taking any notice as far as the yards i have been in, some heaps are anywhere and everywhere

Ive never heard of any law. There is however a law which states that it should be a certain distance from a water course.

if there is a law my old riding school is in trouble, in winter the muck heap stretched out infront of one of the stables!

The law is about watercourses and foul drains (sewers). Te watercourse one is obvious (pollution) and the sewer is because of the risk of ammonia gas building up in a confined space and causing explosions. I think the BHS manual states that muck heaps should be as far as possible away from stables, but no specific distance is stated
