Mucking out a messy shavings bed

Does anyone else have a horse who tramples their dung to a million tiny pieces making it virtually impossible to muck out? The bits of dung are so small that they go straight through the shavings fork and I end up spending almost an hour picking them out by hand.

Any ideas?

One of mine is like that, so his bed always looks brown and dirty!

We had a few like this on the yard, only solution is gloves and a tub trug!

Mine does that! She doesn't box walk but in the morning - eeeurgh The worst was when I tried wood pellets. total mess and expensive, I couldn't cope with her lying on top of a dri-ish muck heap.

Yup my horse is FILTHY!! he scatters his bedding around and also his poos, lies down in all the shite and wet bed and then stinky rugs and stinky horse. He is on a deep bed of shavings with rubber matting, have gone back to small shavings rather than the large shavings which I ended up using more if as most of the bed had to go out. I despair, he never used to be this dirty, it must be a mid teenager thing!

Mine does that, the only options that work for me are a tiny bed on mats that can be taken out in full daily, or a full straw bed where he doesn't kick the droppings around.

Oh dear, and here was me thinking that you'd come up with some wonderful device to solve the problem! I've even wondered whether some kind of gardening type sieve would help!

I suppose it's some comfort that I'm not alone!

Mine is on a shavings bed, usually quite clean and poo's left in tact but occasionally he does have a party and its awful. I out in with gloves and a tub trug and tend to be able to keep the bed pretty clean

Rubber gloves and a bucket. Deep litter too so you're not sifting through the whole bed as the base will have compacted down solidly.

My mums horse is a bit like this, and although you have to play hunt the poo, I can at least seive most of it with the shavings fork....
I'm convinced she should move his haynet to try and reduce him chewing it up, because when he hears something he goes straight to the door, and rather han stepping back to it (its in the corner on the same wall as his door) he does a full circle of his stable.
I would love her to try a net at the door, but she can't be bothered to move the tie ring.
Failing that as others have said, rubber mats, thick bank and a base you can remove everyday
