Mud and foot pads

Hi - has anyone got any ideas of what I could do to stop mud getting between my horses foot and his remedial pad?

He keeps getting abcesses and I am sure this is the reason - the mud / debrie hardens and causes bruising etc.

Would be so grateful for ideas.
