Mud fever/abscess

Hello,
Our horse has swollen hind fetlocks. On on his fetlocks he has raw opens sores under the skin. Do you think it could be mud fever or an abscess breaking out in the leg? He is currently on bute and antibiotics, the vet wasn't sure if it was mud fever or abscess. We have never treated an abscess in the leg, what do you do? We haven't treated mud fever, what do we do?

I'd try washing his legs with Nizoral Shampoo - you can buy it at the chemist - its amazing for MudFever - dilute with hand hot water, work well into the affected area and beyond, leave 20 mins, then rinse. Usually find the mudfever goes within days. Often only had to wash once.
