I read somewhere on here that to soften the scabs you can put cling film on their legs for an hour with something underneath it, but I cant for the life of me remember what is was...was it sudocrem or something?

Baron has been in for a week now and 3 legs have cleared but on one of his hinds (the one with the white markings on) he has scabs galore on each side of his fetlock, they are really hard and I dont want to pick them off.

Ive been keeping them dry and putting iodene spray on twice a day and plaster him in udder cream before I ride him. So i thought I may try and soften the scabs tonight then try hibiscrubbing them off.

So was it sudocrem or zinc & caster or something?

Sudocrem and zinc/caster oil are quite similar, so you could use either. Protocon is also good to use on mudfever scabs under clingfilm.

I already have some nappy cream down the yard so will give that a try tonight. Am I right to plaster it on, apply cling film over the top (not too tight) and leave for about an hour? Then should I wash it off or leave the cream on overnight (minus the cling film) and try rubbing the scabs off tomorrow?

I used Lincoln Teatree ointment, was brilliant stuff. It is BRIGHT yellow though!! Sudocrem would also work, as long as it is antibacterial and non allergic type, should do the job.

hiya, my cob now in (read cracks on gypsy cob in vets) he has scabs that start off as tiny blisters and then weep and crack, im using heel to hoof ointment... but ive heard that protocon and clingfilm for 24 hours is good, ive also been given advice by a head lad of racing yard in newmarket, he said a lot of tb's have it this year and they are poulticing for 48 hours to soften scabs, then wash with hibiscrub then anticeptic cream such as sudocream etc, im just using heel to hoof that a memeber advised me to use on here, one crack has alsmost healed, others still appearing though :-(

Wash the area, pat dry with paper towels, apply any old cream such as sudofed, protocon etc and cover with clingfilm. Bandage over the top carefully with sticky bandage tight enough to stay put but not stop bloodflow.
Leave completely alone for at least 24 hours, then when you remove it you find the scabs slide off like butter.
Repeat until all scabs are gone, then just try the cream on it's own.
If the legs swell you may need anti biotics as well.
The treatment method was devised by a local vet not me!

Oh God, my brain's going!!! Yes sudocrem, I bet it's too late to edit the thing now too..Blame it on little sleep last night, the house shook despite being 400 years old and stone built. When we got up a section of the walled garden wall had crashed down taking a ceanothis tree, loads fo camellias, roses and shrubs with it. So I am tired, stressed and apt to make daft mistakes..
(hee hee, like to see a horses reaction to sudofed, probably fall asleep!)

Well I tried it this morning as his legs were a little damp last night after riding but I had to use normal bandages as I only have 2 sticky ones which were in my first aid kit, didnt want to use them as knowing my luck if I used them something would happen and Id need them.

Anyway I tried this cream that I use for my dogs dermatitis. Although it is human cream perscribed for my OH's dermatitis it works wonders on my doggy. It says for chapped, infalmmed, dry, cracked, itchy skin (and a few more things but cant remember). Should be rubbed in twice a day and can also be used before a bath for sufferers whos condition is made worse by contact with water.

So I put a small amount on last night to check he didnt have an allergy to it, which he didnt, so I plastered his legs in it this morning and crossed my fingers it works

I will check them this afternoon and if alls ok will leave on tonight and see what happens.

I ditto the cling film!!
My piebald got mud fever after he cut his pastern. it did get infected, so he had antibiotics as well.
Vet told me to plaster udder cream over the area, wrap in cling film & then bandage.
I did it for 3 days & all the scabs slid off. Then put just the udder cream on until healed.
Works a treat
