Hi All,

I look after a lovely mare once/twice a week, have done for almost a year, when I am not at the yard she is on full livery but won't get much attention or any 'extras' unless I am there. - Long story, definitely NOT how I would keep her but I am trying to make the best out of a not-great situation.

So I need advice - at the moment she has smelly hooves, I disinfect them every time I go to the yard with hoof disinfectant. At the beginning of this year she had bad mud fever, so I am going to do my best to try and prevent it happening again. Difficult when owner is never there / doesn't bother to help much but I am trying to do what I can.

Does anyone have any advice on how to prevent mud fever and what might work best when I don't go to the yard every day?
She is stabled every night, usually turned out in the day but fields have been shut lately due to the weather. Her stable isn't kept as dry and clean as it should be unless I am there - so most of the week I suspect it's damp a lot of the time, I know this will only make her hooves worse.

She has feathers (not massive but some), I have seen different views on if they should be removed or not to prevent mud fever, but last year she got really scabby and sore cuts :( I really want to do everything I can to prevent that happening. If I start to put sudocreme or pig oil around her pasterns before she is turned out again, is this a good idea? I know it won't protect her for a whole week but if anyone has any long-lasting reccomendations please let me know.

(And please be nice - as I've said she isn't my horse and if she was I definitely would not be keeping her as she is currently kept!)

Thank you

Pig oil and Sulfur or keratex mud fever powder are long time leave on products that could help.

On the other days does the owner do her or is she on livery?
