I have a dilemma..my mare had mud fever just realised today but lives out 24/7 and there is a river going through her field which they all cross about 3 times a day! How on earth am I going to treat it! someone please say theyve had the same situation and won!

TBH there isn't a lot you can do but as long as she is well in herself then it will clear up by itself, it'll just take a bit longer that's all. Of course if she becomes very lame and swollen, perhaps you will have to bring her in and treat it but she should get over it very well all by herself.

Thank you

I just feel like anything I do for it will be pointless as soon as she goes out and runs off over the river! I suppose your right it will just take longer than normal

Hi Im in your boat, mine both live out and one has mudfever on his back heels, TBH he isnt lame and they arent swollen, so Im just leaving it.

If he is in long enough for them to try off, usually only at a weekend, then I will brush off and put some Aromaheel on, but Im not worried, the field is drying out now so it will clear up soon eough.

Well its hard to tell as shes got very hairy legs and big feathers..but theres a patch on the inside of one of her legs where the hair has come off about an inch long and wide but cant see any bad bits apart from that..

I was in this situation. We have river through our field and pony got it badly - he was lame but no swelling. He came in every day for about an hour. I hibbiscrubbed it, rode in teh school so it could dry out and then put mudguard on, or some or this yellow stuff which i can;'t remember the name of

He came sound after 2 days of this (and still being out!) and has been sound ever since, although still has it mildly but there isnt much I can do

pig oil and sulpher.

Wonder cure!!

My lad is out 24/7 in a field that has deep deep mud in some places and he comes in without any mud on his legs and his mud fever has gone in 2 weeks!! and no signs of it coming back.

Mix 1 ltr of pig oil with 2 handfulls of sulpher, apply to all 4 legs as high up as you like, ideally leave to dry in over night, but if not put them out.
Legs look all yellow and yukky for a few days but no mud sticks and sulphur clears the mud fever.
Lasts 6 weeks, so re-apply after 6 weeks.

totally safe. Its just oil (liquid paraffin really) and flowers of sulphur.
All the showing people use it on their feathery horses, shires etc.

If you google it you will find a few links and a few vets saying they have used it.

some amazing pictures on New Rider forum of someone who's horse had very very bad scabby mud fever and its all clear now.

It sounds like the way to go with woolly legs!!!TheresaF (please forgive me if i have quoted the wrong name
