I posted before about my boy having mud fever and it getting infected, I got the vet out the day after posting (2 weeks ago) and I got given anti b's and bute for him, the swelling went down a bit (it was literally right the way up his leg!) it's now about down to his hock, but the anti b's finished on Tuesday and it hasn't reduced any more. He's not sore on it, and he has been kept in for over 2 weeks now as the vet recommended until end of treatment and the weather has been terrible. I'm thinking as he isn't in pain and there's no heat that it might be still swollen because he's stood in? He wants to work and I can tell he's getting bored stood in all day and night but I don't want to risk putting him out in the wet again, and I don't want to work him until the swelling is reduced. Does anyone have any experience with this, having the leg swollen nearly a week after the anti b's finishing?
Thanks

Yes, I would say their swollen because he's stood in.

Are you exercising him at all?? That will certainly help reduce the swelling.

Haven't had a chance to exercise him much, the vet said complete box rest while he was having the anti b's and sods law as soon as he was off them the weather turned and it's been terrible the last few days and I really don't want to get his legs wet again in case it was something more than just because he's stood in.
I have concrete hard standing on my yard so I'm thinking to have him out on that when it's not raining so he can move about a bit but I dont want to put him out in the field because it's soaking out there :-/
Thanks

Can't understand why a vet would say complete box rest just for an infection? Granted don't turn him out in the wet while he's healing but at least walk out in hand.

He definately needs to be moving about for his circulation, i would certainly let him wander on the hard standing while you muck out etc, lead him around in hand for a while first though, you don't want him having a hissy fit on concrete.

I am a firm believer in letting horses with minor injurys go out and keep moving as much as possible to aid healing. (Weather permitting)

hi, my boy was in from sept-apr this year with really bad mud fever. the swelling was awful. He was walked for twenty minutes in hand every day and i exercised him once a day by riding or lunging. Points to remember is no boots or bandages. I have never heard of complete box rest before for mud fever.

The box rest was only meant to be for while he had the anti b's, not for as long as it has been but like I said we have had a serious amount of rain where I am, theres been a lot of flooding with standing water and I didn't want him to be out in that. The weather is getting better though so I will be having him out on the concrete as much as possible to give him exercise, and take him for walks on the road if the ground dries up a bit (yard is at the end of a track that has only been concreted half-way, the rest is mud with big pot-holes currently filled with water  )
Hopefully that will help the swelling go down, I wasn't sure if it was just because of him standing in or if it was something more, thanks very much for all your help and advice :)
