I cured this with sportabac boots and mud fever powder in the winter but got fed up with washing the boots and thought he would be fine in the summer.
NO, it has started to reappear and he is scabby again.
Boots going back on , poor lad

The dew on the grass is causing a lot of cases to reappear - my girl has four white socks and she had it at the end of the winter - she's had to have her legs clipped to be scanned so have started putting mud guard back in her feed just in case!

My mare has two white socks behind, no trouble all winter but just a fortnight ago small bits of scabs started to appear and its got worse! I've been hibiscrubing, mud guard, equilibrium close contact boots and its just not getting better. I've got antibiotics and flamazine from the vet today and started her on the mudguard food supplement at the weekend so hopefully it will start getting better. If you use the boots and powder does it dry everything out?

TBH you shouldn't actually use the boots if you already have scabby bits cos they can't dry out as the boots keep them moist. (it does say this in the boot instructions, but no-one keeps them!) You'd be better doing everything you're doing but leave the boots off.

He had it really bad in the winter and I tried everything and had antibiotics from vet and as a last resort I tried the boots and powder and it started to clear straight away and was completely clear for the rest of the winter but it was hard work washing them every morning and drying them on the radiator.I know they say not to use them if you already have mudfever but they worked perfectly.

C. Are you sure its MF and not abrasion from a sand school? I have used some stuff recommended by my on-line vet supplier which is : Anti viral, anti bacterial, anti fungal.
It cleared up in no time at all (also works on MF).

I used to use Sudocrem on my boy's mudfever. He doesn't get it at all now since I've been adding Naf 'Mud Gard' to his daily feed.
I continue to add it to his feed even through the summer months, as it is best to keep up the resistance to the bacteria
in the soil, which causes the mudfever.
It's been over a year since he last had it.

On its way

My horse is getting Mud Fever again and its June! Its called Dew Fever in the States and thats exactly whats causing so much of it at present, the dew. Mud Fever is best prevented from nutrition which allows the skin the fight the bacteria. One product I have used to great effect is "Mud Warrior" from Equine Answers. Their website is www.equineanswers.co.uk

I was amazed last summer to get my hardy pony in who against my wishes had stood in mud all winter during the day and when i say mud it was up to your knees round the gate and not much better elsewhere without a spot of mudfever, came in hopping lame, i though something was seriously wrong as she couldnt walk, called the vet who came out and said it was mudfever she had got a tiny nick just above coronet band and the been in long dewy grass!
