Mud fever...to the forehead? WTF???

So the old man has no mud fever to his legs.

But he has developed scabs on his forehead :confused:

I rubbed them off, which sent him into bliss and sprayed him with dilute iodine, which sent him through the roof :p (he's not keen on spray bottles :rolleyes:).

I left the stable with him glaring at me with a yellow forehead :o

He continues to teach me......we've never had mud fever to the forehead before :confused:
 
How bizarre! Does he rub his face in the mud (like my weirdo?!). After years of different treatments, I used Avon Skin so Soft and it went within 2 weeks.
 
Its more likely to be rain scald than mud fever. My boy has very sensitive skin and he gets rain scald on any (and I mean any, including his forehead!) exposed skin. I have to keep him in a full neck rain sheet and bring him in if its raining for over 48 hours solid. Since I live on the west coast of Scotland that's more than I would like!
 
Frank does at various times of year.. not sure whether related to sweat/flies/moulting or what and head scabbiness (looks like rainscald/mudfever scabs) is not always proportionate to body scabs (silly ginger scabby sensitive skinned 'hardy' cob)

he also ends up with a yellow head as I use sudocreme with sulphur which works a treat and they are gone in the next day or 2. If I leave them they spread!
 
Proabably rainscald and not uncommon - same bugs as mudfever really. Treat in same way and make sure you are careful not to spread it via grooming kit etc.

Probably due to very wet but still fairly warm weather.
 
Does he have a whorl/whorls or markings on his forehead? The ginger one is prone to getting rainscald there - have never worked out if it's due to the whorls or his star :rolleyes:
 
the hair on franks white patch is generally thicker than the ginger head hair.. have often wondered if that makes it less breathable ;)

can we have a scabby chestnuts support group?

The scabs aren't an issue in themselves.

It's more the warning that his immune system is weak that worries me :(.

Or do I just take it that at 26 and with rampant Cushings, I can expect the odd problem

I was hoping to paint a bullseye or pentagram on his forehead with the iodine.....but he jumped around so much it just looks like bird poop

There is that, and then there is the fact that this has been a bloody awful year weather wise (well here it has anyway). The ginge hasn't had mud fever or rainscald in 10 years + yet has had a few patches of it this year, and I had put it down to the weather. There are also a couple of others at the yard who have it for the first time now.
 
have to say I stopped worrying about F's.. 7 years later they still occur sporadically (summer/winter/inbetween) though better when everything is clipped! I don't think there has been anything wrong with his immune system in that time.. he's otherwise a healthy bod..

All of my lot that live out get little scabs on their foreheads, generally where their whorls are, star type area. The mare with no markings gets some lower down on her face too. We just figured they were some nasty little midgy bug bites. They love having them scratched off too :p Wouldn't worry too much unless it gets much worse :)
 
yep the lightbulb had gone in the stable tonight so grooming by feel and picked a few forehead scabs too as well as a few tiddlers on the front legs, only appeared with the rain in the last couple of weeks though - rain, mud & masses of flies ... what a summer :(
 
My boy gets this every spring on his head!!

But for some reason he got it a couple of weeks ago the worst he has ever had it was higher up than his normal place (his forehead/cheek area) - it was 3inches big and between his forlock and ear...and red raw!!

Sprayed it with purple spray/cleaned with hibi scrub - which 'he' said was totally uncalled for and i was i mean lady ;) - and it went, like it usually does

I have always assumed it was either rainscald or some kind of fungus thing noone of my other neddies get it just him..weird...
 
I'd like to join the scabby chestnuts group too please :( mine sloughed the skin off his muzzle this year, a combination of sweet itch, mud fever and harvest mites I think. Had to stable him to allow some skin to grow, because as soon as it got wet he was rubbing his scabby skin off on the fence posts. poor boy.
 
My pony gets these.... They are caused by her eating the grass around the prickly nettles, she gets them on her legs to.
 
My ginger sausage gets it every year around this time, it sprouts anywhere, particularly top of his legs, but as I said randomly anywhere, on his face in his mane etc I treat it with pig oil and sulpher and he gets blood salts added to his feed, cost me £120.00 in vet and skin test first time as didn't know what it was, skin test came back with nothing, makes clipping difficult.
 
My youngster gets this. Big white face, and spends a lot of his time with his head in bushes which causes enough minor scratches to let the bugs in. This year was worse for it with it being so wet.

I find mud fever/rain scald is always worse when they're moulting too as the pores are more open.
