my horse has the start of mud fever on his legs, he's got a few scabs on his heels. i know there are lots of treatments and thoughts on how it should be dealt with but was wondering what people thought about using a nappy rash type cream called Bepanthen?

has anyone used this before or would it be a no no with the ingredients, i'm hopeless at ingredients and stuff (too much info to take on board!) so any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. thanks

thanks guys, i've been using sudocreme but so have lots of other people and on the other horses it's almost aggravated it so thought i'd look around at other options or ideas.

For mud fever I use a product called Equi-Oxcide by a company called Trussteed. Its a liquid you paint over the top of the scabs a few times a week. once the scabs falls off it means that the bacteria has been killed. Worked wonders for my mare after I had been battling with her mud fever for 3 months.

Clean with diluted Hibiscrub and towel dry, if its sore then treat with Flammazine from your Vet, let that soak in then coat with Pig oil to keep the mud off. Its worked really well with my mare and hers has gone. The pig oil keeps the area moist so any remaining scabs soften and come off very easily without the pain. I repeat the process 2-3 times a week. The Flammazine has cleared up the sore looking areas that were there so from then on I just use pig oil. Be careful with Sudocrem as if you dont get rid of the scabs and dry the area thoroughly then you may seal in the bacteria so it can breed freely.

that could be what's happened with other horses i know then, as i said above, lots of people use sudocreme and it's helped some horses but seems to have either done nothing or made things worse on others.

Flamazine (applied twice daily) and Cobactan didn't shift my gelding's MF. He's now had a 15 day course of Norodine and Hypocare sprayed on 3 x daily (lots and lots) and it's nearly gone (please don't come back).

Please forgive the hijack ... IzzWizz do you apply the Flamazine daily or just every few days, and just to sore bits? Thanks :)

I've just applied it 2-3 times per week. I dont wash her heels every day so as to not upset the skin balance if you know what I mean. Its worked well for my mare. It seems to soak in and as she lives out I seal with pig oil, don't shake the sulphur up thats in the container of it as I think it may make her sore. Have read a few comments on here about some peoples horses reacting to it. It settles at the bottom of the container and I leave it there. So far so good!

Hibiscrub unless too sore, then either sudocrem/udder cream or vaseline. Pig oil is fantastic and if your horse is now living in I'd swear by it. Got a mare who got awful mudfever, was too painful for her to wash it and had heard of pig oil. Applied it all over affected area every few days and she's right as rain. Be careful though - I've heard if you apply it to wet legs it can strip the hair off. Not sure if this is true though! :)
