Hello, this was also a real problem for my horse until last year. I now use a product called Mud Fever spray. You don't need to wash the legs with this as it keeps them free from mud and amazingly clean. Last year my mare had mud fever and the spray cleared this up fast, this year I applied it as soon as the wet weather came as a preventative.

Hope this helps as I know it can be a real problem.

Yes spray it on before she goes in to the field, I usually apply lots of it on the first application and then top up every other day.

A good barrier is Baby Oil. Put it onto dry legs twice a week, put plenty on and really rub it it. This will form a waterproof barrier so you can still rinse off her legs as long as you dont go mad by scrubbing them every day. Or there is some stuff in Robinsons called Leg Guard, it works out cheaper than baby oil if you are ordering from robinsons anyway. It is just and oil based lotion though, im using that at the moment.

I use mudguard feed additive and turnout boots (sportabac). Started beginning of September - so far have not had any mudfever although other horses in same field have.
