I've just read that emu oil can be a real help for mud fever and is now available in the UK. Has anyone used it before for this purpose? A friend of mine in New Zealand who keeps show horses swears by the oil, but I've not heard of it being used in the UK before?
 
never heard of it either, is emu oil, like the bird, emu oil????????

I used it on my dog as used to get really bad outbreaks of dermatitis (his belly and between his paws get really itchy, inflamed and dry skin appears which gets even worse when his licks it). It did the trick for that and mud fever is quite simalar to his type of doggy dermatitis in terms of symptoms. Although I guess it would work out quite expensive to apply to the horses legs.

It is said to have anti inflamatory and anti bacterial properties and as an oil it should also waterproof the legs.

I have a hairy shire horse and I use global herbs mud x in his feed. I have done this over a couple of years and its fantastic and he has had no problems with mudfever

My friend got some emu oil off the internet for herself! - I'm sure theres a supplier in this country! If you can't find it email me and I will try and find it for you.
