Billy boy seems to have a touch of mud fever on one heel, red and inflammed and very sore! As a precaution B is staying in his yard for a week to help it, and as a further precaution he will be going on AntiBiotics for a few days, just to make sure :)
Have washed it and is clean, and have put botanica cream on it (http://www.botanica.ie/) which is a very good all round healing cream. I need something to help keep it dry and allow it to heal - is there anything you recommend for this?

The last time I had problems with mud fever was about 4 years ago, and used camrosa then - but since then has anything new and better come on the market?

oohhh I actually have an answer for this one! :) I use Aroma-Heel on mud fever. It keeps the water off and helps it heal. It also smells nice :) Also, my vet gave me some fab cream to put on in the stable which cleared it up a treat, but I think she mixes it herself so I dunno if you'd be able to get any :/

I've been having ongoing problems with my youngster as he is so pink skinned. He lives out 24/7 but have found that bringing him in for a few days every couple of weeks works well just to give him a break.

In the mean time I have used pig oil & sulphur on all his legs & this has worked very well. He had terrible m.fever before that went up to the very tops of his legs, sheath & all under his belly. I had him on antibiotics for a few days & P&S'd him since & apart from a little reacurring from me being complacent he has done very well.

The sulphur kills the fungal infection & the pig oil acts as a barrier against the mud. I plaster him in it once a week & that works well (as long as I stick to it!)

I find Sudocream brilliant for any scabby parts as it clears it up within 48hours. Camrosa is also good, I use that on the very pink parts as a barrier also.

The only thing that works with my horse is a herb mix by Dodson and Horrell called mud fever mix! Imaginative :D I worked with them to develop it as nothing was working. But then I have a very strange horse who only seems to get mud fever in summer!

Yes, that's my problem; Billy is all white leg and pink skin!

Good to know that there are other things to use, may have a go at aroma heel, as the pig oil is too hard to get hold of near me!

Charliemouse - Flamazine, as in human medication? I do have some of that (we like to use Intrasite gel as well :) )

Do the mud fever supplements work? Slightly dubious considering mud fever is an outside induced problem!

I *think* it can be used on humans, but my vets prescribe it if any of mine have a touch of mud fever (so must be fine for use on horses!), it clears it up super quick!

Flamazine is a human burn (i think) cream but we use it very widely for horses. Excellent stuff - contains silver/anibacterial/bacteriotatic properties. It will def clear it up. I would use it while in the stable vernight (or twice daily if staying in)then Botanica in between times. We make up our own creams depending on how bad the mudfever is - varying amts/types of steroid and antibiotcs.
I recently met a client using that Aroma-heel stuff and have to say it seems to be good stuff. As for the sudocream - we used to use it for our own horses years ago but it can react with the skin and cause further inflammation - safer to use vaseline as a barrier as it wont react.

The mud fever herbs do work.

I trialed it, my horse's legs were so bad you could put your fingers in the holes, cleared up totally in a couple of weeks. He got mud fever in late spring last year again having not had it for years and after antibiotics and creams and potions galore for 3 months I put him back on the herbs and all cleared up in a few days.

The herbs have marigold (caledula) and echinacha in them.
