Towards the end of last winter my horse understandably developed a few spots od mud fever.
Obviously as the ground dried the mud fever healed and disappeared, all but one patch. Its on the outside of his fetlock- well a little higher but near enough.
Ive tried hibi scrub, just water, pickings cabs, leaving scabs, sudocreme, Sulpher, various mud fever shop bought remedies aswell as completely leaving it alone.
However its still there and now the pink bare bit is about the size of a £2 coin but there are thick scabbed bits below it still to come off so it seems to be growing outwards still.
Its quite sore. Ive washed in very dilute hibiscrub and rinsed that off well before towel drying this morning and covering in skin healing antiseptic gel but can anyone suggest anything else?
There is no heat, swelling or lameness in the effected leg so I don't think antibiotics are needed (I try to avoid antibiotics as he has a sensitive tummy)

You could get some Flamazine cream from your Vet, but if that doesn't work you might need antibiotics. My boy had some really persistent mud fever and we finally got rid of it with antibiotics and hypocare as applying flamazine was a real battle, but the hypocare was easy.

Is it expensive? Im almost sure actually now you mention the name that we may have some of that at work prescribed for one of the horses there.
Why is it difficult to use? Stingy?

Yes Flamazine is pretty pricey as it contains silver - but that's why it works as silver is antimicrobial.

Basically CG's leg was sore and he didn't want me to slather a thick cream on the sore patch, where as I was pretty quick at spraying the area. I think that because I didn't need to press his leg to apply the hypocare, that really made a difference.

I had the same last winter and needed antibiotics which had to be given with prebiotics as they were really harsh on the digestive system. The leg swelling went but new patches including one largish one also the size of a £2 coin have formed since and I still can't completely get rid of it. Have a vet cream but it doesn't seem to work, didn't find hypocare worked either but might try it again now it is drier. Was wondering if it is a reaction to sun or something else in the field now. I use fungatrol wash or tea tree shampoo as hibiscrub a bit harsh.

Stop the Hibiscrub, its too harsh on the delicate skin. Dermoline tea tree shampoo is better. Flamazine is good and try to leave it alone once cleaned and treated with the Flamazine, just keep topping to Flamazine up when its soaked in, avoid getting it wet as far as possible, maybe just clean once or twice a week. Aloe Vera Vet Spray and the jelly is good too, tried and tested on a horse on our yard.
