Hi everyone. I believe my TB has mild mud fever, he has a scab the size of a 1p piece on the back of his heel and a few scabs on the front. The scabs are really hard and other horse owners at my yard have advised me to just rinse and dry with a towel as normal and NOT pick the scabs off as they are hard.

Other people have advised to wash with hibiscrub and put cream on? Whats the best thing to do?

His feet are not hot ad I thought it was getting better until it appeared on the back of the foot? Its not really feasible for me to not turn him out he gets really stressed and het up when hes turned out late, let alone left in? Plus I work in London so wont be there to entertain him if he is left in?
He is usually turned out with over reach boots on, but I have left these off because I thought they may rub on the scabs and make it sore?

This is my first horse so my experience with mud fever is extremely limited! Who knew how stressful this could all be!

Thanks in advance!

My horse has mud fever too, he's a heavy cob so I've had to clip his feathers, I have been washing in hibiscrub and drying and applying drapoline cream. It seems to be working but time will tell as it took a while for clippers to come so it will be easier to monitor it now he's clipped. The scabs are falling off when washed or when applying the cream. I had read it's good to get the scabs off.

His is quite bad and if not improving in a week or so I will get vet out. Have been keeping him in as field is so muddy and wet, mud fever is a nightmare :(

It sounds like mud fever. Do a search on here, many many threads on treatment. He will need some fairly intensive effort and management while you get it cleared though.

Heel to hoof by barrier tech or (sorry can't remember company) is the most amazing mud fever product, just slap it on and watch it heal. Love that stuff (hibi srub first to get clean )
