Mud Rash Treament - Please Help!

I am at the end of my tether with mud rash, no matter what I do Vienna still manages to get it – hose, don’t hose, brush, udder cream, pig oil, baby oil, feed supplements. I’ve tried everything and she still gets it. And lets not to mention all the money I’ve spent on products.

Anyway, Vienna has mud rash on her two fronts, I have muddy marvel descab but don’t really want to keep using this as feel it’s a chemical at the end of the day. I’ve heard of people using cling film, has anyone used this method and what did they do?

Any other suggestion are very welcome.

You probably need something a little stronger having tried all the 'home' type treatments. Speak to your Vet. A steroid based cream/ointment should do the trick. I struggled for ages with sudocrem & then pig oil & all that kind of stuff.

I then spoke to my Vet did 3 days of washing with hibiscrub, then thoroughly drying & applying Fuciden H ointment which contains steriods & can only be got from Vets (or on prescription from the chemist). Now all gone.

Occasionally they need a helping hand with a course of oral steroids.

The cling film is useful if you are trying to remove scabs not it is not a cure.
 
I'll try anything - thats the way i feel. I'll give the MTG a try.

Our fields are terrible!!! too many horse in them for a start! but thats another problem.

My vet gave me betnovate then I used muddy marvel barrier cream.She had to have course of antibiotics to clear hers up as cellulitis set in.I stopped using hibiscrub as she was reacting badly but we have to wash her legs and towel dry every time she uses sand school.I think the most important thing is to dry legs after any contact with mud or sand .Its a real pain.

My girl had terrible mf last year on all four legs and i like you tried all sorts. I got the vet and she gave me flamazine cream on prescription. It's brilliant stuff, expensive but worth it. I found it cheaper on the net and my vet matched that price. I did use cling film over udder cream and bandaged overnight, next day wiped off carefully and the scabs lifted gently. I then used the flamazine and bandaged again but i did turn her out in them. I washed with hibiscrub every couple of days to get rid of all the goo but dried very thouroughly before starting the flamazine again as it strted to get better i left the bandages off and rubbed the cream in then left some as a barrier It cleared very quickly once the scabs were lifted. Hope this helps, it can be a nightmare.
 
My boy suffers with mud fever every year. I've tried everything including brown paper, honey and carrot! (A suggestion from my farrier!!!!)

The best thing I found as a preventative is Camrosa. It's a bit like vaseline and you need a special remover to take it off but it also helps treat the mud fever.

When he gets it (and despite my best efforts he always does as I not around to bring him in and clean his feet straight away.) I was his legs with Malseb (came from my vet) and the scabs just fall off. I then slap on the camrosa and that seems to work.
 
Liquid paraffin under clingfilm is great for getting rid of scabs. And its cheap! Udder cream is too thin so just comes off quickly. Muddy marvel barrier cream is much thicker and stays put.
Marigold in feed is v good for the skin.
 
thanks for all your suggestions, i know the best cure is prevention but like others have said its so hard to avoid. i have tried hosing and drying legs but she still gets it, then i tried not hosing, leaving the mud to dry then brushing it off and apply some sort of barrier but she's got it again!!

She has a few scaps so going to wash with hibisrub and keep her in for a few days but like my mum said she just gets it again when she goes back out.

Roll on the summer!!!!

Another one is warm animalintex like you would for a poltice. i have found this the most effective as it actually draws everything out the skin not just the scabs! its is believd to be a bacteria that cause it so you need to get rid of all the bacteria in the skin.

vet wrap the leg with the warm animalintex over night and generally (you may need to to it twice or more) it comes up completely clean
