Hi I don't have particularly muddy fields but new horse who has white stockings on all four legs, came with some residual mud fever, so think he's prone to it. I'm just wondering if it's worth buying mud socks. Has anyone had experience of them and are there any pitfalls in using them?
thanks

The equilibrium ones are good, though I found I still had to hose the outside of them down after to get rid of the heavy mud (they kept the legs dry/mud free though). Sometimes they weren't dry enough to put on again as the damp went through to the inside, so was a bit of a catch 22. After about three weeks they ripped too! Though I think I was just unlucky as none of my friends had the problem with rips.

The PE ones are apparently very good, and better value for money.

my friend uses the shires ones - you need lots of pairs! in at night so has a break from them in the evening - her horse is hypersensitive to sunshine on his white legs and also needs the summer turnout boots. If some mud fever - uses a barrier cream under the socks - keeps them clean and protected. Has also vet wrapped any particular areas and then put the socks on - they have been a godsend to her and her horses sensitive legs!

I hate them. I had the equilibrium ones and no matter how tight I put them on, mud seeped upwards, so the legs got wet and muddy anyway, plus they made her legs hot. Then cleaning the turnout socks and getting them dry for the next day was a challenge. They also rubbed my mare so i gave up on them as a dead loss. I switched to using muddy marvel barrier cream and that was far, far superior and she's not had mud fever since, including the wet winter we had last year when she was turned out 24/7.

You do need to make sure you have *completely* got rid of all mudrash before you use them though - otherwise they make it worse!

We use the shires ones, much better than the equilibrium ones. And only £19.99 so so much cheaper.

Get a few sets as I don't like putting them on wet.
