Hi Everyone. Can anyone suggest anything to put down on a poached, muddy, boggy patch by my field shelter? I have had suggestions such as, bark chips, pea gravel and rubber grass mats. At the moment I am soaking it up with straw. With grass mats, don't you have to put them down BEFORE the field gets muddy?

Anything organic like bark or straw will rot down and won't help long term. Personally I think it makes it worse as you are adding to what's already there. You could put down hard core, we have that in our gate ways and it does the trick but it is costly. You can also try adding drains. I've never used the grass mats so can't comment on them. For a cheap quick fix get some large carpet offcuts and peg them down with old fashion wooden tent pegs, you have to keep an eye on them though because if the get holey or lift they can trip.

Is it part of an underground spring??

if so...nothing..

if not, srape off to a depth of 9-12 inches..with a mini digger..lay down a layer of salpings/hardcore..replace what was removed....roll re-seed..fence off to avoid hoof damage until at last next spring.
