Muddy field entrances

Hi, just wondered if anyone has any bright ideas for field entrances during the winter or longer term. Have heard that bark or even hardcore can be laid to permanent field entrances which has turned to mush. Would be keen to hear others views. thanks
 
I think the long term solution is to lay a good base of hardcore and then top with road chippings. This is what we have done in our winter paddocks and it works really well. Howver, if horses at out for long periods, they will still poach the area around the hardcore.

If you are renting or need a cheap / short term solution, you could try tipping soiled shavings in the gateway and leveling them. We did this in a dry area of the field to make an all weather arean a few years ago. It worked quie well, so may be worth a try.
 
We've stoned our gateways by digging them out putting in large hardcore, then a Terram membrane and then small stones on top. I've seen it suggested somewhere to use an old foam backed carpet - don't know how that would be?
 
Not a solution for every one but hopefully we have just solved ours! We have concrete leading up to the gate but on the field side it was obviously really muddy in winter. The solution? Move the gate back 10foot so the concrete extends into the field now! Also a good area to feed from as they are not standing in mud anymore.
 
on my field entrances i used wood chipings from the farmer, and it worked a treat last year... the wood chipings was free so even better...

Would add the concrete in the field only works if you don't have looneys - I wouldn't use this method as mine would probably slip over and knacker their knees.

Gravel helped (i got some for £18/t), but I should have put a membrane down to do a proper job.
 
Thanks everyone for your advice. Think that the hardcore or wood chippings is the way forward for me. Will be looking for a supplier this week.
