Girl at yard has an all black cob with v heavy feathers - he has fairly bad mud fever on all legs...
i asked her what she going to do (in a non mean general inquiry way) she said leave it alone till summer and it will go away...
this does not seem right! i may be wrong but surely she should treat it? (he has never to my knowledge had it before) #
Thanks

your right it wont go away without any medication on it it will get worse she needs to hose it then put some kind of barrier on it

The problem with very heavy feathers is that alot of the time they are very difficult to treat, I think the bacteria can just hide in there

It cant just be left..as it is an infection...it will need cleaning, drying and protecting...it will just spread up the leg and will be sore for the horse.
My black mare had two scabs on her hind foot and within 48 hours it was lymphangitis and whole leg swelled up to maximum...I admit this is extreme as my mare is a sensitive tb and the reaction was rather a surprise but she had only had mild mud fever about once before in the whole 11 years I have had her!!!

She needs to sort it before it gets infected and causes real problems, it is a painful thing to have so she has a duty of care here.
She needs to clean it with hibiscrub, dry it really well and then put on a barrier as stated above. I believe pig and sulpher is getting a lot of good reports. I sued naf mud fever stuff and it worked well too.
