My horses live out, so I don’t need stable rugs generally, but one of mine is off to my trainer for a couple of months and will be in during the day and out overnight. I don’t particularly want his turnout rug being poo stained so I’ve been looking for a rug for him that can be multipurpose as I don’t have much use for anything other than turnout so don’t want to buy multiple rugs.

- wicking material that I can use as a cooler during travel (he’s a bit nervous and will sweat on the box) and after work
- material that shavings will not stick to, so not a simple fleece
- nothing too heavy as he is a hot horse
- will need to go easily in a washing machine
- sensible colour that won’t show poo/pee stains
- ideally less than £75

Thermo Master from Kramer do a wicking stable rug for £37 which has good reviews. It says it’s Terry Towel so I don’t know if that’s like fleece or not but for the price worth a look. I have one of their quilted stable rugs and I prefer it to all my Horseware ones. It’s well made and easy to wash at home.

I use 'Thermo-cell' waffles for similar reasons to you.
I have one from Derby House which is quite heavy and one from Mark Todd.
Weatherbeeta do a version which is around £75 or Mackey have one for around £40 (called Shannon) which I have been eyeing up as it has buckle fronts and shoulder gussets which I prefer on rugs.

I have the weatherbeeta thermocell and very pleased with it. I wanted something more lightweight than my thermatex as unclipped horse was getting too hot. I frequently use it for travelling and to chuck on as a stable rug overnight after exercise and it fits well and keeps horse warm enough without him getting too hot.

I want to know where you live! My turnout rugs have a 3" thick crust of mud on them by this point in the winter. No chance of noticing any poo... 😏

I have been very lucky this year and up until the rain last week we had no mud and I could walk around in trainers. I’m in SE and it has been very very dry. Which does mean our hay is a ridiculous price - not sure which I’d rather

It’s clay so now I have some mud at the gate, but I have a lot of land for 2 horses and a mini with good thick grass cover, so avoid much mud most years

A towel material is a bedding magnet, as anyone with a rambo dry rug has likely learnt to their peril! 😂

Tbh I've found that using turnouts in the stable work really well. Any poo or pee from the stable just gets washed off in the field.

I'll be interested to hear what people recommend as I've always used either a 100g stable or an amigo mio stable sheet over the top of a wicking rug to stop the shavings sticking to them. Possibly something like the thermatex cordura stable rug would work if you only want one rug as it's essentially a wicking rug with the nylon outer built in/ on to it?
