Hi guys

I have my Ella who is 26 years old, she has had 5 foals her last baby is daisy who I am just about to buy! Ella was still suckling daisy when she was 2 and half years old as Ella wouldn't give her up, when they tried to seperate them at 7 months Ella smashed her stable up and was found outside Daisy's stable the next morning so the breeder left them together for the next 2 years till Ella was sold on!! Daisy is now 7 so she's not seen mum for 4 and half years now. Will Ella be ok with daisy now if I bring her onto our yard?? Will they remember each other?? I'm worried that they might turn on each other, the breeder said that they wouldn't but just need some outside advice please.
Many thanks
Deni xx

I would think they will remember each other but as long as the daughter hasn't been sucking anything else meanwhile the habit should be broken.

Perhaps as a precaution you could smear something vile on the mare's teats that will put her off starting it.

Cattle do this sometimes and it is very difficukt to break the habit.

I wouldn't imagine there will, they will remember each other and I'd have someone on standby with a camera and a video to capture the reunion moment. I would reintroduce on their own in a field, rather than in an in-hand situation?

A girl on the yard said to me that they would fight?? But I can't see that happening. I will have camera ready I will introduce them in the arena together rather that in the mares field we have a mare on there who is a bit nuts she goes for everyone!! Dont want a huge fight breaking out. I'm very excited but nervous xxx

I don't see why they would fight, if anything they are more likely to be beside themselves at meeting again....I have my 3 year old colt back on the yard where his mum is, in fact his stable is opposite hers. I can't and wouldn't reintroduce them face to face as she has a new baby and he is entire, but they do yack to each other across the barn floor - the new baby also chatters away to him which is lovely....I see mares differently though and wouldn't hesitate to put one of my homebreds back with her mum in later years

Aww how sweet, Ella has been a foster mum to! She was suckling daisy and a foster son at the same time. When we brought her to this yard she taken on a donkey called mushroom bless he's like accent and falling to bits but she loves him lol xxx

I would have thought they'd be delighted to see each other. My mare's last foal was weaned at 6 months & they went back together when she was 9 months. They lived in the same field until the daughter was 7 & then moved to a yard where they are together in summer & the mother goes off to a field of 'oldies' in the winter. They are always very happy to see each other after a separation. When they are together, they often graze next to each other & groom. The only aggression I ever see is when the old girl feels the daughter needs 'putting back in her place' (e.g. when she tries to steal her mother's feed). As said above, make sure you have a camera / video.
