Heyy,

I was just wondering if anyone had any tips of how to get my mum over her fear of watching me jump?

the other day i was jumping Catchphrase at home, just popping over a few little straights to finish, and my mum came to see us. i pointed Catchphrase at the jump, and i'll admit, he does fly at them but im totally in control and he jumps them so nicely! after the one jump my mum said she couldn't watch me any more because it scared her too much seeing him fly over the jumps....

I really really would love it if she watched me - even at shows she has to sit in the car when it's my turn, but will watch anyone else - its not jealousy at all! i just want to show her what i can do...

Love

My mum used to be exactly the same!
From the sideline you could see her wince as i turned towards the jump, and then eventually walk away.
Maybe you could get her to watch some jumping on the t.v so she can see that people do jump bigger than you, or maybe bring her to a show to watch you?
Im not much help but ill be watching this thread in interest :D

My mum hates watching, as does my dad. However, my mum always does just in case something goes wrong! (Admittedly, sometimes from behind her hands!).

Why not get a friend to video your rounds? So she can see them once she knows you're still alive at the end of the round! Once she's seen you successfully go round, she might be more willing to watch you in real life!

As the "mum" myself I know how she feels, I ride myself and used to jump affiliated when I was younger but I can't stand watching my son jump now, my heart is in my mouth and i'm always waiting for something to go wrong, think its just a mum thing, its cause we love you kids and its our job to worry, i'll bet she's dead proud of you thought just like I am my boy and his horse ;)

I haven't had this problem - neither of my parents ever wanted to watch me because they didn't even like me riding! However, my friend had this with her pony Joe (an exmoor who'd ended her up in casualty a few times when hacking at home). What she did was got someone to film it, then her mum watched it later, already knowing that her daughter and Joe had gotten around safely and not fallen. Eventually she learned what a good rider her daughter was and started watching her jump live! Watching some professional SJ's a great idea too. Any jump looks tiny compared to a 1.60m tall, 2m spread!

Yup, as a Mum of a rider I know just how she feels!

I watch because I couldn't bear not to, if that makes sense. If something goes wrong I want to know why it went wrong and how do we make sure it doesn't happen again (if it's preventable).

It's a bit different for me as I taught D1 to ride, until we reached the point where she needed people far better than me, so now I'm learning from her. She's had all the lessons as I thought it important for her to have a good foundation and to build a good and strong skill. Now I find watching her helps both of us :D

I think the camera idea is good and the video one :). I've also found that having a friend stood next to me reminding me to breath is quite useful lol. Other than that, maybe Rescue Remedy?

Just thought:

I find it easier to watch D1 jumping mahoosive jumps, than it was to watch D2 scuba diving in a swimming pool.

Maybe because I know the riding, I know the feeling, the sensation, but scuba diving.... scares me. I was going to take it up so D2 could do more things.

If your Mum doesn't ride, would she sit on a horse and walk round, maybe consider learning?
