I have 15 month old twin daughters, and I am hoping that at least one of them might want to ride when they are older (and not be allergic like their brother is)!!!
My own horse is a 4 year old who I hope will make a good allrounder.
I know it is a long way off but how do you manage your own competitive aspirations with those of your children? Or do I accept that I might end up a happy hacker and concentrate on the kids? Would love to hear from people who have managed both successfully!!!

I never was competitive, but realised that to keep my pony I had to involve the children - so I got a governess cart and broke him to drive until they were old enough to ride.

My daughter has just turned 2 and is really starting to show an interest. I had bought an unbroken mini shetland and Sec A as companions for my Friesian before I fell pregnant. I'm now in the process of backing them for her and all is going well so far!! She's ridden them a few times now. But I am finding that all my attention is focusing on my daughter and her ponies, I just don't have time to fit everything in with work and family too. I've found a lovely sharer for my Friesian so it's working out ok and luckily he's not the type to need to be ridden everday! x

I can't comment on competing with kids! But just wanted to say we believe I was allergic to horses when I first started riding, I used to come home with a terribly itchy throat, and swollen itchy streaming eyes, but after a few years I outgrew it. I don't know how serious your son's allergy is but if minor theres always a chance he will end up outgrowing it too :) then you may end up with all of them on ponies!! I take my cousin's little boy for riding lessons and love watching him learn, he just adores it so I can kind of understand how easy it might be for parents to relax achieving their own goals over using the time to help their kids achieve theirs :).

Hi Buddylove,

I have a 6 nearly 7 yr old daughter who is going to be getting out to do some jumping over the next couple of months - I hope to be taking my new boy out aswell so will just be picking some unafiliated shows that can cater for us both, we are lucky that we have a venue close by that has so much going on at the weekends from x-poles up to 1m courses ....Also i hope to take her hunter trialing with me over baby fences so I can keep an eye on her & she can follow me....Its all about strategic planning;)
