I had a beautiful Muscovy duck. Her sister got eaten by a fox and I felt sorry for her because I thought she was lonely, so we got her a boyfriend.
He was only a young bird and they seemed to get on OK, then almost overnight he discovered his testosterone and turned savage - used to attack the OH by jumping on his back! I could only get him back in the duck house by sweeping him along with a yard brush.
In the end we donated him to a sanctuary because he was really scary. The duck didn't seem to miss him and lived happily by herself till the end of her days. She was a lovely pet to have, laid a couple of eggs most days, and they're a very quiet breed - they croak rather than quack.
Be aware though, they'll trash the garden, so make sure they're in an area that you don't mind being dug up, but they love slugs and other creepy crawlies, so they'll keep garden pests to a minimum. And don't forget to clip their wings, or they'll be gone!
oh dear I didn't realise drakes could go the way of some cockerels. I was thinking of getting two ducks to the one drake and hoped that would be enough for him. Trashing the garden is ok-dont really have one as its all given over to animals except the paved/bedded bit which is fenced off from poultry anyway.
