Normally the odd few mushrooms we have pop up look just like the kind you buy at Tesco, and I've never really worried about them before but I have allsorts of weird and wonderful looking things popping up at the moment and I don't really know whether they're safe of not. They're just in the winter fields and under the oaks which have been fenced off anyway but it makes me wonder if maybe they're not in the grazing paddocks because my ponies are eating them.

Have looked at online identifiers but the closest I can find are fairycaps which seem to have grooves in the tops, which these dont have. Any ideas?

Thought it was just us ! We have edible mushrooms growing in the paddock where the horses graze now, we've had them in the past on occasion but nothing like this year. My horses don't touch them, well bess likes to trample them , i tell her to go careful but she doesn't listen.

Are they magic mushrooms? They look a bit like them. If so, your local hippies will clear your field in double quick time.

Always check underneath those that look like edible mushrooms. If they have sor brown gills, fine, but if they are white, they are Death Caps and the name says it all - very poisonous. The look the same from above.
I do remember hearing that of hundreds of species only a few are poisonous, lots of the others may not be very nice though. Puff balls are highly prized by top chefs so lookout for them - ££££££s lol

I've had a bumper autumn so far for edible breakfast mushrooms - lovely crispy fried in butter & thrown on hot buttered toast..... :cool3:
Have also got some 'magic' ones growing in the edges of the winter paddock, but have kicked them all over this morning....

OP - no idea what fungi those are, tho I'd steer clear as will only have the breakfast mushrooms :)

Thanks guys, I don't think my ponies have been seeing things / eating anything magic, but better to be safe than sorry. One of my oaks is also dropping acorns the size of a 50p piece. Never seen anything like it, but after not having a single one last year its hardly surprising. Will have to take a photo just to prove I'm not exaggerating!

Been picking mushrooms for weeks. Tried on toast, with eggs, various omelets, huge pot of soup,Tonight it was chorizo, mushrooms and olives fried in butter and tossed onto tagliatelle and olive oil. Next is chicken and mushroom pies with our home reared chickens. Shame I cant grow pastry as well.

Magic mushrooms are tiny with almost thread like stems and pointed caps, the fungus in the OP looks like the sort that grow from rotting tree roots.
