I’ll shortly be moving our boys to my newly rented field, it’s about 4/5 acres. I have the following -

11yo 12.2 cob
Rising 4yo, 11.2 Section A
Rising 2yo Highland

I’ll need a companion for the baby when we take our ridden two out and I can’t decide what to get! Something similar management wise for sure but other than that I’m stuck.

1. Cheap and cheerful (or quality) Shetland? Cute and has comedy value. Fencing is suitable.
2. An ID youngster? Always wanted one but will obviously be quite a bit bigger than my others, not sure how land will hold up.
3. Another Highland?

Would prefer a youngster for the 2yo, I don’t need anything ridden but would eventually like the new one to have a job. Whilst I’d love an ID, I’m trying to save for a lorry and I know I’d be looking at ???. I’m in no huge rush as won’t be taking our two out together for a while but I like to plan and pony buying is fun!!!

What do you lot reckon?

I’d be tempted to look out for a gangly baby from a decent breed but at a fugly stage, and be patient waiting for him/her to grow up and prettify. I think there will be a few cheap ish 2 year olds around early this year, and they’ll be worth more if you keep them for two years and back them, if you want to sell on. I think youngsters get along regardless of size difference. There’s a rather gangly 16.1 2 year old on horsequest for £3k and might just look utterly different when he grows up…
