I have ordered the Shires leather bar muzzle for my cob. It has just arrived and for the life of me I can not see how he can get any grass thanks to the leather square at the bottom of the muzzle - I only wanted to limit his grass not deprieve him completely!

Has anyone used this muzzle successfully? Did you have to adapt for your horse?

I have 2 masks - one shires and one greenguard. I only use the shires one if I need to severely limt intake as it is, in my opinion, very difficult for the horses to eat through.

The greenguard ones are good if you just want to slow them down without completely stopping them eating. Very expensive though and there is a knack to keeping them on. Worth it though I feel.

Dinkies pony website do a very good one - it is made of a webbing mesh so is not as restrictive as the shires one and the fabric is soft enough not to cause rub marks. My cob uses the full size one.

The green guard is also good but can rub, and you also need to buy the headcollar to attach it too which bumps up the cost.
