Hi

One of my dogs as the disgusting habit of eating every pile of dog poo he comes across both in the garden and out on walks, he is also eating acorns and these are poisonous, the worst part is that he is now throwing the whole lot back up - yuk.

I've been putting a Mikki muzzle on him and whilst this has stopped him eating acorns he is still trying to eat poo so it's all squashed up around the insdie of the muzzle and his mouth - yuk!

Does anyone know if you can get a muzzle that covers the mouth area totally, he'll only be wearing it out on walks so doesn't need to be able to drink.

I've found one that only has a couple of small holes in the bottom but I really need a muzzle that has no holes at all.

yuk wot a gross habit!!! just a thought but maybe they dont make them without holes in cos they cant breathe? ;) couldnt you use a halti type headcoller with the dog so you might have more control over the dogs mouth/head? :D

My dog will happily eat and play with his own poo, its actually quite a regular disgusting habit but people dont talk about it. You can actually get pills that makes their poo taste awful and after a while they make stop doing it? Mine doesnt do it regularly just when hes bored, so we have to give him things to entertain himself when were out and make sure the garden is always poo picked

Its called coprophagia and generally signifies a lack of nutrients in the diet - however it can just be a dirty habit they have left over from their ancestors ;)
Some people say giving a dog pineapple makes their poo taste horrific - my Uncle puts tabasco sauce on the poo when he finds it, stopped their young GSD doing it pretty sharpish!

Long line, lots of food in your pocket, a strong command, will help - my dog now hears ah-ah and comes running for his reward instead of burying his head in sheep poo. It takes a while but is a better long term fix x

If he is wearing a muzzle while out & not just for nail clipping etc. it should be a box muzzle like this -http://www.dogsupplies.com/products/Basket-Dog-Muzzle.html.
Cloth muzzles are only for short term use.
He won't be able to eat with one of these on but some dogs do learn to drink through them.

Thanks for all the advice, he's 8 years old and I have had him for nearly 2.

His diet isn't lacking in anything, I do think it is just a disgusting habit .

I thought of the pineapple as I read about that and although it would solve the problem in the garden it wouldn't when out walking .

The only other thing I can do is keep him on the lead which I don't really want to do as he's a Springer, he was very over weight when I got him 23kg and he's only small, (he's now 17 kg) and could barely walk never mind run and now he can run he thinks it's great!

He does know the leave command but I walk them early in the morning and it's pitch black so it's quite hard to catch him at it - I need a flashing muzzle :)
I hate having a muzzle on him as people think he's aggresive and he is any thing but, he's the sweetest dog who loves everybody - 2 legged and 4 legged.

I'll have a look at the muzzles mentioned and see if they'll do the trick!
