right, it's that time of year again, and I need to renew my insurance for 'la mule'. But I have no idea how much to put him as valued? So, any ideas? If I sold..
11YO 16hh gelding - shire x friesian, ridden - slightly green, but very willing & loves his work, no vices, ace to shoe, load, etc, not to clip without sedation, but this is not a cert as haven't tried for 6 years! lovely paces for a 'big' lad, started jumping, but not much under his belt, 100% on roads, ridden out alone (yay) and in company with zero issues, wouldnt class him as a first horse purely down to his size and having the bolshy cob gene - not when ridden though! Has had his 'personal' operation, which effects him in no way apart from needing his sheath cleaned every day, and between his bum cheeks sudacreaming at the same time! Any ideas guys? When I realised I had his saddle valued for more, I thought maybe it's time to get it changed!!!

My horse was insured for £2000 when I brought her for £500, she was insured for £2000 when someone offered me £6000 for her and now shes got lots of problems and probably is worth much atm till she gets better , shes still insured for £2000.
I just keep it the same then the premiums dont go up and down so much, I think that is what most people do.....will be interested to hear others opinions??

Not sure about valuation for yours. A while ago a livery upped the value on her insurance and they insisted on a vetting, wind check, assessment etc. i remember him trying to get the shirex to gallop for long enough for the vet to check his wind. Took a while to get him wound up enough. Lol

hehe Palomino_pony! I don't have any problems getting him to gallop, thats for sure, but thankfully he does have brakes, bit like landing an Antonov jet! I called the insurer (only have him insured for £500 now!) and they told me basically they want to know what he would be worth if I sold him, so market value - more chance of me selling my mother than my boy, so I'm really at a loss as to what his value is!

I think it depends on how much money you would want back if he was pts or loss of use, if your not worried about getting lots of money back to buy another horse then it doesnt really matter

No true! I would want to be able to buy another horse, I was ust a bit panicked when they said if it wasn't a 'true' value, it would affect my cover???? Maybe I got the dipstick when I called - but it did get me thinking that I have no idea, and wouldlike to know out of my own curiosity! I giuess the straight answer would be I would like to be able to 'replace' wth the equivalent if the worst should happen, but if it did I hope to hell I could keep him as a pretty decoration rather than PTS :-)

Id say £1500 or maybe abit more as hes a big horse? £2000? All our ponys are insured for atleste £1500. And our horses are all about £2500

Also its only some insurence companys that ask you to have the horse vetted if you want to up its value - i know the NFU will ask for a 5 stage vetting if you want to insure with them.

Thanks all! I left NFU a couple of years ago, but have never been asked for a 5-stage (or any other vetting) - after having him uninsured then the colossal amount his operations cost (ARGH), and subsequently having him insurede for a pittance, I decided to get it done, hence my call to them asking if the amount was what I consider, or a reflection of his true market value - they said the latter!! I've popped him down aroud the £1750 mark to hit the happy medium! Thanks everyone!
