I know this has been done to death so I apologise in advance and will try to keep it short.
I have had my new horse for nearly 2 months now, having bought him as a "backed 4 year old." I have since been told by my equine dentist that he is closer to 5 years, but that's irrelevant. Anyway, he was incredibly nervous on arrival, so we've basically just gone back to basics with him. Following weeks of confidence building, gentle lunge work and short, bareback rides around the yard, we have progressed to riding in walk around the outdoor school. I noticed his clicky hock several weeks ago, and it used to click intermittently during lunge work. Now I am riding I have noticed that he is starting to click with nearly every step, and am a little concerned about what this might mean in terms of joint integrity etc.
I've been trawling through past threads on the subject and saw several people have recommended Suppleaze Gold for joint mobility. Is it wise to start him on a joint supplement so young? I've been told that some youngsters tend to have clicky joints, most growing out of this as they age, so just wanted opinions on what I can do in the meantime?
Also, had anyone found feeding oil a good alternative to joint supplements?
Any advice would be hugely appreciated
