had a kissing spine operation 10 days ago. She had 7 impinging vertebrae and 4 pieces of bone were removed in the operation. I elected to leave her at the veterinary clinic untill her staples are removed which was the right decision as she is suffering from a small infection in the front part of the wound where the dressing was stitched. However the antibiotics have been changed and it's all under control. So hopefully I can take her home next week sometime.
I go and see her every day. The first 3 days she was very down and just about managed to come and say hello before wanting to be left alone. But over the last week is back to her old self. She is moving, bending and stretching ( all of her own accord) like she has never had a major back operation. Of course there is a long way to go yet and after another short period of box rest at home she will then have paddock rest for a couple of months before I start to lunge her.
I wont know untill I start to ride her a few months down the line whether or not the operation has been successful enough but both my mare and I are due some luck so fingers crossed. For the time being I just pleased that she seems comfortable.
