Seriously. My mahogany bay 6yr old has an incredible amount of white hair though his coat. It is especially concentrated around his flanks and back. Lots of white flecks. It is only really noticeable up close, but once you look it is amazing how much white there is, and once I clipped him I was shocked at how grey he was. What's going on???

My 3 yr old is exactly the same and has been since I've had her as a yearling. Sometimes it is barely noticeble and at other like when she's changing coats I would swear she has a roaning gene (despite her sire, dam, damsire and damsdam, grandsire and granddam all being bay!!). Like yours she has it mainly on her flanks.

Noooooooo. I love his colour, lovely rich bay. Sire is pure black, dam is bay......no roan genes as far as I know. Don't want him changing colour. But surely if they are going to change they would do so much younger than 6???

Well you can see from the pics in my sig that the grey bits are barely noticeable so hopefully your lad will stay the same. Probably some random gene that just gives a few flecks. Mine hasn't gone any greyer since I've had her and atm, now her very dark winter coat has come through, the grey flecks are barely noticeable - 2 months ago and they were really obvious close up but you wouldn't tell from about 5m away.

It is a very odd thing though - I'd love to know what it is and what causes it!! The first time I noticed it on mine I would have said it was from rug rubs but as she'd never worn a rug I guessed it must be genetic, especially as it is on both sides.

Ronnie has gained grey flecks through his coat in the last few months as well, he's a lovely bright bay and I really don't want him to go grey as they're so difficult to keep clean! I keep telling him that he's not allowed to go grey but every day I swear there are more grey hairs.

He's only 4 by the way.
