Hi everyone, just wondering if anyone can help me. My boyfriend is looking to have a career change from being a mechanic to a farrier. He has been around horses nearly his whole life because of his mum and sister owning horses. When he was young he had his heart set on being a farrier too. From spending lots of time around our horses i think he has (i hope) decided what he wants to do. Does anyone know of any apprenticeships with farriers in Leicester or any websites that could point him in the right direction. Thank you all in advance. Emma

The best person in your area is Stephen Hill - if he isn't looking, he will be able to point you in the right direction, and give invaluable advice. Top, top farrier, and very highly respected.

Get in touch with the farrier training agency, google it, and they should be able to give you all the information.

You may find that due to the withdrawal of funding for apprentices by the WCF that if your husband is willing to self-fund then it might be a very good time to become an apprentice.

I don't think the colleges are taking any students in/on until 2014 - so my OH was saying.

It tough to get an apprenticeship, my OH sent out 300 letters. He was just about to give up when the phone rang and he was offered one.

He takes his finals in November, its been tough and stressful - there's a lot of pressure put on by the colleges. However it is rewarding and OH loves his job.

When the colleges are running the course a pre farrier course may be a wise move:) sets you in better stead of getting an apprenticeship and will allow him to get a taster of college.

Usually done in 2 or 3 blocks over the year (4 year course) and he will be away at college for anything from 2 weeks to a month. (That was what was toughest for OH and I).

:) best bet is to contact a college/farriers training agency and find out all the details. Work experience won't hurt either, always a good thing to do!

The NFTA aren't taking any more apprentices on until at least 2014 because of the mess it is in. Not even self funded ones at the moment.

Keep an eye on the NFTA website and the WCF website to see if anything changes but there is a lot of disappointed would be apprentices out there who were told only a few weeks before the intake that it would no longer be available.
