Really shook me up especially as we nearly went through a terrified car/driver! All over a cow poking its head through the bush. Nightmare. Dreading tomorrow now but must remember its happened once in 7 months.

Arrrrrrrrrggghhh, I HATE that saying 'Bombproof' NOTHING is bombproof!!!

But a cow isn't a bomb so therefore it must be a scary monster!! Bombproof doesn't necessarily mean cow proof...

Seriously though, perhaps there was just something in the situation this morning that really freaked your chap out. Could you ride out with a friend until you get your confidence back again?

Tomorrow is another day - try not to worry about it. Hopefully the cow will keep its head in its field tomorrow and your boy will be back to his normal bombproof self!

Hope that you are ok? I was expexting an explosive ride this morning as it was blowing a hooly but she was a total star, thank goodness.

Can you hack out with someone tomorrow?

no i couldnt stop him not at all bloody git. had to swing him into someones yard and hope - cos we were going to end up in the pub / car park / ditch. trouble is the yard i swung him into is where a girl im meant to be riding out with for the first time tomorrow resides and she saw so i shall expect a "sorry but i have to cancel our ride tomorrow" text later.

Well being a living breathing animal they are expected to get scared of something at some point, no matter how 'bombproof' they are.

Glad you are ok.

ETS it sounds like he spooked rather than bolted, you still had steering! when Lance spooks he will p*ss off given half the chance.

I used to have a horse that would literally cross the road when he saw cows, he hated them, think its the way they look at you!

I think the fact you could steer means that although he took off, he wasn't blind panic bolting, so that should put your mind at rest a bit. And the weather yesterday has sent them all mental.

thanks everyone, it did knock me for 6 really and i think "steer" mightve been the wrong word to use but he bolted all the way down the main road in our area, narrowly avoiding 3 cars (1 was nearly hit) and i couldnt stop him for about a quarter of a mile and the only reason i think i got him into the drive of said yard is that he has 2 friends down there - eaglestone yes thank god you werent coming up the drive you wouldnt have recognised our baby and you mightve been claiming against me for damages! i nearly called yo to bring the trailer out but took him home via another route, i know some say to persevere but i know his and my limits and he would never have even faced that road again in that state today, ill ride him somewhere else tomorrow then try again on sunday!! thanks again everyone

I was keeping an eye out for you as I knew where were going to be out and about and I realised I had you hi vis sheet, so would not have been surprised if you popped in for it via the fields, but I did not think LITERALLY! BL***Y cows they always upset N but you never came across them when you rode him!
Hope you are ok and you know where I am if you need a friend .... just thought tho P isn't a cow lover either so may not be a good companion.

Try not to worry too much, even the most reliable horses can have their moments, just not very often in some cases. I'm sure he will not make a habit of it.

For example I have been riding my horse on the roads for 11 years and he probably would generally be described as "bombproof" but we have had a couple of incidents over that time where he took off on the road. They were not related and he forgot about them and went past the places they happened with no problems afterwards.

Try to have someone with you next time you ride that route if you are still worried, to help you feel confident, quite likely if you can forget about it he will.

Glad to hear that you are both OK doll. Not a nice road at that time of day for being anything like out of control.

I notice that you nearly started a bolt or just running away debate

I had heard that being afraid of cows putting their heads through bushes may be related to the size of the horses brain.

see mines the same nothing will faze her helecopters landing, guns firing nothing fazes her!!! but a cow stood up once and she jumped to the other side of the road snorting lol however now there are cows in the next field she has adopted one of the calves that follows her up and down the fense so they are no longer horse eating monsters
