My bombproof horse proved that he isn't

Its a standing joke on my yard that my horse is a saint, which he is, and is totally unflappable, and I think secretly many think he is a tad boring, beacuse he does what he is told, isn't flighty and is generally a good lad.

Well yesterday went for a super long hack about 2 hours, and he was walking out a treat and showed no signs of flagging. My friend out on her cob was frightened of puddles, drains etc, mine just ignored everything as usual.

On the last stretch we turned up this country lane and I felt him tense as I approached a corner I could see over the hedge tops about 20 people metal detecting, he went in to major meltdown, but as this point he couldn't see anything. His breathing was so rapid I could feel him pushing my legs with each beat, his eyes were wide and I got the feeling that something could happen, just then a head popped over the fence with huge multi coloured headphones on shouting hello!.
WHOOSH he took one look reversed and bolted up the road, I must admit I wasn't quite ready, lost my stirrups and ended up around his neck with one leg over the saddle, how I stopped on lord only knows, I kept thinking sh$t don't panic just keep on.

I did managed to stop him and he was so frightened, my friend could't believe it and had to escort him past, even then he was coiled up like a spring and breathing so quickly.
I wondered if he had heard the high frequency of the detectors and reacted to that as he really couldn't see them until this lovely but colourful head appeared.

I am going to hack him past this place tonight so hopefully he'll be ok,but If I see any metal detectors I think I'll make a detour, but its just goes to show that any horse can be unpredictable and take fright in strange situations, he will glady go past the local pig farm with squealing and grunting pigs that he cannot see, but obviously metal detectors are a big no no!.

Oh dear! I suppose they do look a bit odd! Maybe he thought they were aliens? At least you stayed on, anyway

You did well to stay on and get him past them.
My horse gets really upset by metal detectors too. We had a bad experience a couple of years ago with a big group detecting near a bridle way which ended up with me being trampled. Now he gets upset if he even hears one. I'm sure its the noise that terrified him - he can be a silly horse, but I've never known him to react that badly. Interesting that your friend's horse was ok with it though - the horse we were with freaked out too.

jumpthemoon- I feel so sore this morning my leg and stomach muscles ache. I had to stay on beacuse I'm not sure if he would have stopped, never seen him react like that before.

Hullabaloo - Yes it was strange as my friend horse usually spooks for England didn't really bat an eyelid- maybe he's deaf- lol.

Just hope he's okay going past later and doesn't remember anything.

I dont do much hacking, infact, really none at all, but if he gets upset by metal detectors, and you happen to be walking past them. dismount. and lead him past them while comforting him with your voice or stroking his neck.

Good luck tonight

Stephen

chunklovescooks- I will be talking to him tonight and stroking his neck, more to relax me than anything.
I take on board your comments about dismounting, but I feel that I will have greater control staying on him than leading him, I doubt very much that I could have held onto him yesterday.

I really wouldn't recommend this - that's how I got trampled! I got off because my friend did and really wished I'd gone with my instinct and reassured him while I was on top.

My horse was a bit tense for a while when we went past the same place - like he was worrying they might still be there, but he never reacted like that again and gradually relaxed.
I'm sure he'll be fine.

Totally agree. It is much, much safer to deal with a problem when mounted. Metal detectors sound weird to humans; they must sound even odder to a horse!

Well sat!

I think it might be the metal detectors because mine went unusually tense with a group of people metal detecting in a field (normally wouldn't mind if it was just people).

well done you for staying on! I think it is probably the sound that upsets them, it is scary when they show their wild side. George is pretty bomb-proof but did the same thing to me in Jan, unfortunately I wasn't as sticky as you! It was his out of character reaction and him running off that scared me.

Good luck for tonight.

Well done .... it is a horrid feeling when you feel their heart knocking on your legs and feet .... however that is when you know they are genuinly terrified .... I get that if my old boy is face to face with a Hot Air Balloon ... and that has happen literally

JM07- I suppose the girls on the yard think he's as bombproof as they get and he is usually.

GG- Yes it was totally out of character for him also, and I will admit to be slightly apprehensive about tonight because he certainly tanked off with me at a right old pace of knots, but If I don't do it tonight I will keep putting it off.

Eaglestone- hot air balloons doesn't bear thinking about!
