Hi. This is a new one on me. My boy keeps running off - it started with my very beginner OH bringing him in / turning him out and now he is doing it with my sharer (who gets really upset by it).
He doesn't go far and its safe but frustrating, I have shown them both how to double loop the lead rein around his nose to prevent it. I have practiced the "walk/stand/walk/stand" half a head back respect training with them.
Any other ideas please as how to prevent it and why he is doing it?
(I think he is hungry as the field is bare but it doesn't excuse him). Thanks.

Have you tried those head collars specially for horses that can be hard to lead... i cant remember what theyre called now.. umm...

well im sure someone on here knows what theyre called... but theyre really good anyway!!

controller headcollar.

Failing that, I would use his bridle to bring him in and put him out until he respects them . Sounds like bad manners to me and a bit of p*ss taking, especially if he isnt doing it with you.

Any horse that gets away from their handler ISNT safe. for handler OR horse.

Yup, we used to have a huge hunter who was a gem of a horse except when coming and going from field. Would take two of us and his bridle!

I would also ask them to take a crop to block him with.

Good Luck!

If the horse in question is the coloured cob in your signature then you have my total sympathy. My cob likes to do this from time to time, normally after he has been stabled for a day or two. Our turnout is 2 minutes walk down a muddy lane, and on occasions, he likes to do this. I have found the best solution is a chifney. I know it sounds cruel, but he normally gives some indication that he is going to run off by starting to trot, very, very fast and by putting his head right down. Our YO tried this first with him, when he ran off with her. He gets a quick yank, he thinks twice and it stops. All I have to do now is put the chifney on him, and instant respect.

Good luck, cobs are bolshy buggers sometimes.

think he is using his strength against them. put a bridle or chifney on for a few weeks and manner him! once control and respect re established you shouldnt have a problem. naughty pony!!
